“I Wanna Be Your Man” was originally released by the Stones as a single in 1963 and became the band’s first Top 20 hit in the U.K., peaking at #12. But it was actually written for Ringo Starr to sing by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, who were walking down London’s Charing Cross Road when Mick Jagger and Keith Richards passed them in a taxi.
“So they shouted from the taxi and we yelled, ‘Hey, hey, give us a lift, give us a lift,’ and we bummed a lift off them,” McCartney recalled in Many Years From Now by Barry Miles.
“So there were the four of us sitting in a taxi and I think Mick said, ‘Hey, we’re recording. Got any songs?’ And we said, ‘Aaaah, yes, sure, we got one. How about Ringo’s song? You could do it as a single,'” he added.
“We often used to say to people, the words don’t really matter, people don’t listen to words, it’s the sound they listen to,” McCartney continued.
“So ‘I Wanna Be Your Man’ was to try and give Ringo something like ‘Boys’; an uptempo song he could sing from the drums. So again, it had to be very simple.”
In Lennon’s opinion, the song was a “throwaway.”
“The only two versions of the song were Ringo and the Rolling Stones,” Lennon explained in All We Are Saying by David Sheff.
“That shows how much importance we put on it: We weren’t going to give them anything great, right?”
Lennon also had a slightly different recollection about how the Stones got their hands on “I Wanna Be Your Man.”
“‘I Wanna Be Your Man’ was a kind of lick Paul had: ‘I want to be your lover, baby. I want to be your man,'” he said, adding, “I think we finished it off for the Stones…yeah, we were taken down to meet the Stones at the club where they were playing in Richmond…they wanted a song and we went to see them to see what kind of stuff they did.”
According to Lennon, what happened next inspired Jagger and Richards to start writing their own songs.
“We sort of played it roughly to them and they said, ‘Yeah, OK, that’s our style,'” he said.
“So Paul and I just went off in the corner of the room and finished the song off while they were all still there talking. We came back and that’s how Mick and Keith got inspired to write, because, ‘Jesus, look at that. They just went in the corner and wrote it and came back!’ Right in front of their eyes we did it.”
The Rolling Stones had the distinction of performing “I Wanna Be Your Man” on the debut episode of the BBC’s Top of the Pops as the first band appear ever appear on the show. The Beatles, meanwhile, released their own version of the song with Starr on vocals on With the Beatles, released in November 1963 in the U.K., and on Meet the Beatles! in the U.S., released in January 1964.
