ROCHESTER, N.Y. — News10NBC Chief Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean exposed a row of rundown, abandoned homes owned by Monroe County and the airport in June, and three months later, the county voted to demolish them.
Demolition prep work
Crews were clearing asbestos from two homes on Beahan Road on Tuesday. One house was already cleared and ready to come down. A total of five houses will be razed.
“Just won’t have an eyesore of abandoned houses with animals and people getting in them,” said Chris Judd, who lives across Beahan Road from the vacant homes.
Brean walked Beahan Road with Judd on Tuesday. They walked the same path in June when News10NBC exposed the empty homes across the road owned by Monroe County and the airport.
“We’ve seen squatters go into the yellow house. I haven’t seen anyone go into this one,” Judd said in June.
County bought homes for airport security
The county bought the homes over the last 20 years because they sit at the end of a runway. Airport security strategy includes gaining control of property bordering airport property.During the June investigation, Andy Moore, director of Frederick Douglass Airport, made a guarantee.
“But ultimately my commitment is to have those properties down, completely taken care of within the next year,” Moore said.
On Tuesday night, every county lawmaker voted yes to demolish every vacant home the county owns on Beahan Road. Yversha Roman, president of the Monroe County Legislature, called for the vote.
“All in favor?” Roman said.
“Aye,” the legislators responded.
“I’m happy. Once these houses are gone now I’ll just have wild fields,” Judd said.
“Harmful domino effect”
The demolitions represent more than just tearing down five vacant homes. Abandoned properties decrease taxable values in the neighborhood and cause a harmful domino effect. Dealing with them makes everything better.
“I’m happy. This house here, when it’s gone, I’m having a party,” Judd said.
The vote by the county legislature authorizes the airport to tear the buildings down and says there will not be any adverse environmental impact from doing that. The county says the demolitions are scheduled for late this year and early next year.
