The Alabama Crimson Tide is expected to face the first real test of its 2026 season this Saturday in Lexington, Kentucky.
Alabama’s matchup against Kentucky at Kroger Field on Saturday will feature two quarterbacks making their second collegiate start. However, both Kentucky starting quarterback Kenny Minchey and Alabama starting quarterback Keelon Russell displayed impressive week one performances last Saturday.

Minchey had an impressive showing against Youngstown State on Saturday for the Wildcats, especially through the air, where he completed 18 of 27 passes for 301 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. Kentucky head coach Will Stein said that although there are certainly improvements that need to be made, he was very pleased with Minchey’s performance.
For Alabama, Russell also had a pleasing first start, where he finished the game vs. East Carolina going 18 for 30 through the air for 256 yards while also rushing for 86 yards on 23 carries. Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb said that while coaching players to stay calm is one of the things that’s really hard to teach players, Russell is good at “finding the urgency at the right moments” and is continuing to improve.

Minchey, a senior from Hendersonville, Tennessee, flipped his commitment from Pittsburgh to Notre Dame as a 4-star recruit in November 2022, but after only attempting a total of three combined passes over the 2023 and 2024 seasons, Minchey served as the second-string quarterback behind CJ Carr in 2025. Minchey completed the season 20-for-26, 196 yards, zero touchdowns and zero interceptions.
Minchey entered the transfer portal on Jan. 2 of this year, then committed to Nebraska on Jan. 4. However, Minchey flipped to Kentucky the very next day.
Russell, on the other hand, flipped his commitment from SMU to Alabama in June 2024, and after redshirting for the 2025 season, he won the starting quarterback role for the 2026 season over senior Austin Mack.
College football analysts across the country have discussed Russell’s ability to improvise on broken plays.
“And what he [Russell] can do when plays break down is what won him that job,” said College Football analyst Josh Pate on his week one recap podcast. “Now he has immense physical skill and can throw the ball anywhere you need him to throw it, but there is still some rawness to him.”
Keys for both quarterbacks ahead of kickoff
When the Crimson Tide and Wildcats face off on Saturday, Minchey will have to be quick in his decision-making against a very strong and experienced Alabama secondary while also being able to escape from the pressure of an expectedly much-improved Alabama defensive line.
If given enough protection by the Alabama offensive line, and if able to continue to improvise on broken plays and make something out of nothing, Russell can be a serious threat to Kentucky’s defense under first-year defensive coordinator Jay Bateman.
