The Denver Broncos wrapped up their first official regular-season practice on Wednesday as they prepare for Monday Night’s season opener on the road against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Denver Broncos were back on the field on Wednesday for practice as they prepare for Monday Night’s season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Even after winning the AFC West and sweeping the Chiefs last season, the Broncos aren’t overlooking Kansas City and know that they’re going to get every team’s best effort this upcoming season.
Despite Patrick Mahomes coming off of a devastating multi-ligament knee injury late last year, Denver’s defense believes that they’ll see the same elite version of Mahomes they have seen every year.
“I think the toughest thing is his presence in the pocket,” Bonitto said. “He knows where guys are coming from, where to step up, where to back out, if he’s going to spin — while he’s able to do that, he’s also able to navigate his receivers downfield and get them open or throw them open. He’s a huge challenge, and obviously that’s what makes him great.”
On top of preparing for a healthy Mahomes, the Broncos are accounting for the newly added presence of Kenneth Walker, who the team knows adds another layer to the challenge Kansas City will provide against the run in addition to rookie Emmett Johnson.
“Certainly you pay attention to what you’ve seen in the preseason and also what comes out of the… You kind of hear their commitment to running the ball more,” Payton said. “They selected one [running back] early who we thought was a real good player [Chiefs RB Emmett Johnson] and then they signed a pretty highly-regarded free agent [Chiefs RB Kenneth Walker III], so you pay attention to that. Their commitment to running the ball I think is evident in the offseason.”
Bo Nix prepares for fifth matchup against Steve Spagnuolo’s Chiefs’ defense
Since Bo Nix has entered the NFL, he’s played the Kansas City Chiefs exceptionally well. Nix is 3-1 vs. the Chiefs and has put up impressive numbers against them, but is 1-1 in head-to-head matchups against Patrick Mahomes.
That win came last year at Empower Field as Nix orchestrated a game-winning drive in the fourth quarter in Week 11. The only loss Nix has had to Kansas City was the heartbreaker after the Chiefs blocked Wil Lutz’ kick at Arrowhead in Bo’s rookie season.
Against Kansas City, Nix has a 71.3% completion rate (98-of-134 passing), 1,013 yards, seven touchdowns, one interception, and a passer rating of 108.8 against them.
Spagnuolo’s defense has gotten to Nix five times in four games and loves to dial up exotic blitz looks, whether he slants the defensive line and loops an inside backer, brings a safety or corner on a blitz, or brings his linebackers on double A-gap blitzes.
After Wednesday’s practice, Nix shared that he knows Spagnuolo will throw some different looks at the offense that they haven’t seen yet, but they’ll have to respond quickly after each series.
“He may be the defensive coordinator that I’ve now faced the most going into Game 5 against him,” Nix said. “I don’t think I’ve faced a defensive coordinator five times yet really in my life. I feel like he’s going to have many bags of tricks and have a lot thrown at us, but at least I can see it a little bit. I’ve seen a lot of their structure, and I’ve gotten more and more comfortable. It’s the beginning of the year with Game 1. They’re going to throw something at us that we’re going to have to make adjustments to and that is one of our keys. Just get to the sidelines and make adjustments. Play what we see and fall back onto our rules and techniques. He’s a great defensive coordinator. He’s been doing it for a long time for a reason. He’s one of the best in the game. It’s exciting playing against a defensive coordinator like that. He presents multiple challenges. He’ll throw a lot of different things at you and make you respond. We’re going to be ready for it but also have to adjust.”
Marvin Mims present for Wednesday’s practice
The Broncos will release their first official injury report on Thursday after practice, but so far this week, wide receiver Marvin Mims has been present for the start of practice during the media viewing portion.
We’ll find out what his official level of participation is when the report comes out, but Mims is such an important piece to what the Broncos want to do both on offense and special teams.
Last year against the Chiefs specifically, Mims had a 70-yard punt return in Week 11 against Kansas City that ultimately led to points for the Broncos offense. To be able to do that at Arrowhead Stadium on Monday is something that could swing the game in Denver’s favor, but the reality is simple: the Broncos do not have anybody on the roster right now who can do what he does on special teams, and his clutch factor offensively has been something the team has had to rely heavily on over the course of the last two years.
Hopefully Mims will be able to go.
