When Jacob Webb and Caleb Thielbar came out of the Cubs bullpen to blow what was looking like a great Cubs win last night in Milwaukee, I made the following comment in my postgame recap: “The bullpen just does not have enough juice to get this done. And there are only Hail Marys left to help ….” Well, one of those Hail Marys is Edward Cabrera, who will return as a reliever when the Cubs finally do call him back up sometime this month.
And I’d say he just took a nice step forward this afternoon, with a much better overall outing against the Toledo Mudhens in Iowa: 2.0 IP, 2H, 1ER, 1K. The results aren’t perfectly clean, but his actual appearance was arguably better than the final line might otherwise suggest:

More importantly, Cabrera was bringing some serious heat this afternoon, which is what you’d love to see in short bursts out of the pen:

— Iowa Cubs (@IowaCubs) September 9, 2026Cabrera’s fourseam (96.2 mph) and sinker (96.5 mph) velos were a great deal lower than 99-100 mph throughout his time with the Cubs this season. So that does suggest he could ramp things up a notch out of the Cubs bullpen. Maybe that (plus fewer opportunities for blisters to form …) can make a difference for him. And at this point, as sad as it is to say, the Cubs don’t have much to lose. The bullpen has let them down over and over and over. You might as well give Cabrera a try.
Of course, before we get there, he’ll need to pitch closer together, if not literally on back-to-back days. And so far, that hasn’t been the case. He pitched on September 1, then three days later (September 4), and then today (September 9). If you’re worried about this recent gap, however, allow me to point out that the I-Cubs were off on Monday and rained out last night. So my bet is that his next appearance is going to come sooner than 4/5 days.
And if/when he settles in with a couple of games back-to-back, I’d expect him to come back to Chicago soon thereafter. And then maybe he and some of the other Hail Marys (Jaxon Wiggins? Justin Steele? Shelby Miller?) can find a way to turn this unit around. I wouldn’t count on it for any of them, let alone all of them, but that’s what the Cubs have to work with. Gonna be a stressful final few weeks.
