In a world where elite athletes jump around the world to train with some of the sport’s best coaches, Russian sprint star Egor Kornev turned down the chance to train under one of swimming’s biggest coaching names: Bob Bowman.
In a report from Sports.RU, Kornev met with Leon Marchand at the European Championships and was gifted a cap by the French phenom; he also shared a conversation with the four-time Olympic champion, an exchange of words that may not have been Kornev’s strong suit. The more interesting point was that the two could have been training partners under Bowman’s leadership.
“I’m going back home and I’m going to seriously work on my English. I know some basic phrases and I can almost always understand the general meaning, but by the time the long season comes around, I need to be able to actually speak English properly.” Kornev said in an interview with Sport.RU. “Léon and I could have trained together. His coach, Bob Bowman, invited me… His scouts are still messaging me: ‘Come over.’ But why? After his assistants turned me down, Bob himself came up to me. He said that if it doesn’t work out right now, I could come after 2026. Why does he need me? He told me, ‘Come train with me and you’ll become a star.’ [Kornev responded] ‘Sorry, I can’t.’”
Bowman is not the only coach who has tried to get Kornev stateside to train. In the interview, he claimed that several coaches have contacted Kornev about potentially joining the training group.
“Caleb Dressel’s coach also messaged me, and I was invited to Todd DeSorbo’s group, where Gretchen Walsh, Kate Douglass and Sara Curtis train. Jack Alexy’s coach contacted me too. Everyone was really interested.” Kornev said. “I would go abroad if Olga Nikolaevna (Kornev’s current coach) stopped coaching. But she has no plans to do that. And I have a very close relationship with her. We work really well together, and we communicate really well too. There are no restrictions in our conversations. She’s a huge authority figure for me, someone I listen to, but Olga Nikolaevna is also my friend. Somehow, she manages to be both. She’s done so much for me, and I’m continuing to improve. So why would I leave?”
Kornev also touched on his pure racing ability and feels that while he thinks he is talented, he may not be on the same level, though he believes that he will break world records, and many of them for that matter.
“Of course I have talent. But people like Michael Phelps, Marchand, and Miron Lifintsev are on a different level. It’s hard to explain, but some people are simply born with an incredible natural ability to swim. They have certain instincts for how their body moves through space and an exceptional level of movement control. I’m a five-out-of-five. They’re six-out-of-five. You have to accept that—that’s how they were born. But that doesn’t mean they can’t be beaten. Hard work counts for something too.” Kornev said in an interview with Sport.RU. “There’s a lot I can work on. Plus, I’m still developing physically. I’m getting stronger… I think pretty soon world records are going to be coming like sunflower seeds. I don’t want to jinx it, but I’ve gotten so close to them already. I can practically smell them. Whether it’s short course or long course, I’m right there. There’s not much left—and then they’ll start falling.”
