A minor was arrested and charged as an adult Tuesday with first-degree rape and first-degree sexual abuse that occurred on campus Saturday, according to a Wednesday morning press release from Capt. Jack Kennedy, commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit.
A University student reported to UAPD Saturday that she had allegedly been sexually assaulted, with the reported suspect being an acquaintance of hers. Police responded to the incident at the 800 Block of 2nd Street, near John H. England Jr. Hall, a freshman residence hall.
The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit Sexual Assault Section conducted an investigation following the report. Following the investigation, a magistrate issued a warrant for first-degree rape and first-degree sexual abuse.
The suspect was arrested on Tuesday and taken to the Tuscaloosa County Jail, where the suspect is being held without bail pursuant to Aniah’s Law.
Aniah’s Law is an Alabama law that allows judges to remove the possibility of bail in certain violent crime felony cases.
The suspect is under 18 but faces the felony charges of an adult. Authorities said law enforcement is prohibited from releasing any identifying information about the suspect because of the suspect’s juvenile status.
