The city of Omaha, Nebraska, home of the US Olympic Swimming Trials from 2008-2021, has received planning approval for a new indoor aquatic facility.
The new facility will include 1200 spectator seats, plus extra standing room, as well as large deck space for athletes.
In addition to the eight-lane Myrtha-built long-course pool, which can be split into two 10-lane short-course yard pools and is seven feet deep throughout, the facility will include a separate smaller pool for learn-to-swim lessons and classes.
The project has been approved for planning and is now in the fundraising phase, aiming to raise about $7 million of the $20 million total project cost.
Several area high schools, including Creighton Preparatory Academy, Marian High School, Skutt Catholic, Mount Michael Catholic, and Duchesne Academy, will use this facility as their home pool, as will the Greater Omaha Aquatics League (GOAL) club team. Other teams and organizations can also rent space.
Greater Omaha Aquatics Foundation President Riley Lebbert told SwimSwam the space will also bid to host several meets, including local meets, Sectional Championships, the All-Star meet, Zone Championships, Collegiate conference meets, and the newly announced College Swimming League.
The city has long lobbied for a new 50-meter pool, as it has relied on only a few options, including one on the University of Nebraska at Omaha campus and another outdoor public pool at Hitchcock Park.
During summers when the city hosts the US Olympic Trials, the pool is built inside the CHI Health Center in downtown Omaha as a temporary competition site.
