Boston’s “More Than a Feeling” became one of the biggest rock songs of the 1970s, but its journey began far from a major recording studio.
Tom Scholz worked on the song in his basement studio in Watertown, Massachusetts, while still working his day job at Polaroid.
Released in August 1976 as the lead single from Boston’s self-titled debut album, “More Than a Feeling” quickly became the song that introduced the band to the world. It entered the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 on Sept. 18, 1976, and eventually reached No. 5.

Before Boston had a record deal, Scholz spent years developing his music at home.
According to Rolling Stone, Scholz would return from his job at Polaroid and spend his nights working in his Watertown basement studio. The space became the place where he carefully built the layered rock sound that would later define Boston.
“More Than a Feeling” was not completed quickly. Scholz worked on the song for about five years. It was among six songs he developed in his basement between 1968 and 1975, before Boston secured its record contract.
The early recordings featured Scholz working on most of the instruments, with Jim Masdea handling drums and Brad Delp providing vocals. Scholz also used equipment and techniques he developed himself to create the guitar sounds he wanted.
The demo recordings were repeatedly rejected by record companies.
In his reflection on Boston’s debut album, Scholz said that by 1975, he had finished his sixth demo and was not expecting it to change his career. He described it as his final attempt to record his best songs before giving up at age 29.
Epic Records had also rejected the earlier demos. However, after hearing “More Than a Feeling,” the label offered Scholz and Delp a recording contract.
Even after signing, Scholz wanted to keep working in his basement rather than move the entire recording process into a professional studio. That decision became an important part of the story behind Boston’s debut.
Boston released its self-titled debut album on Aug. 25, 1976. “More Than a Feeling” served as its lead single and soon became a major hit.
The song combines electric guitars, strong vocals and a melody built around memories of someone from the past. The name Marianne in the lyrics came from Scholz’s older cousin, whom he had a crush on when he was a child.
Scholz later explained, “There actually is a Marianne. She wasn’t my girlfriend.”
Rolling Stone noted that the song was inspired in part by “Walk Away Renée” by The Left Banke. Scholz had been influenced by the song while developing his own composition.
The success of “More Than a Feeling” helped make Boston’s first album a major commercial breakthrough. Other tracks from the album, including “Peace of Mind” and “Foreplay/Long Time,” also reached the Billboard charts.
The debut album eventually became one of the best-selling albums by an American rock band. As of 2025, it had been certified 17× Platinum by the RIAA.
The song itself also earned a place in rock history beyond its original chart success. It appeared on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s list of the “500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll.”
Rolling Stone also recognized the track’s guitar work, placing its guitar solo at No. 63 on its list of the 100 greatest guitar solos.
For Scholz, the song’s story began much earlier, when there was no guarantee that anyone outside his basement would ever hear it.
In his 2026 reflection marking 50 years of Boston’s debut, Scholz recalled the surprise of finally finding an audience after years of rejection.
“After six years of discouragement, BOSTON suddenly blanketed the radio airwaves!” he wrote, according to Rock Cellar.
Fifty years after Boston’s debut, “More Than a Feeling” remains closely tied to the story of an engineer and musician who built songs at home, faced repeated rejection and eventually turned one of those basement recordings into a defining rock hit.
