Matt Lucas is opening up about something he’s kept private until now.
The former Great British Baking Show host revealed that he is autistic while discussing the balance between his social life and the time he prefers to spend alone.
“I’ve never ever spoken about this publicly, but I’m autistic,” Lucas shared during a recent interview on BBC Radio 2.
The 52-year-old comedian and actor explained that his diagnosis helps him understand why he enjoys moving between highly social environments and periods of solitude. “I enjoy periods of being very sociable, like you are in the theater, and then I also enjoy those periods of solitude where I can just write on my own,” he said.

That need for alone time becomes a must while Lucas is working in theater six days a week. He explained that on his one day off, alongside resting and protecting his voice, he typically prefers to keep to himself. “I like not to see people and give them a break from me,” he joked.

Lucas even admitted that he doesn’t entirely mind the forced downtime that comes with getting sick. While many people dread having to clear their schedules, he finds a silver lining in suddenly having nowhere to be. “I think, oh lovely,” he said. “Oh great, I’m ill, don’t have to see anyone.”
Lucas is well known to American audiences for his time hosting The Great British Baking Show, the U.S. title for The Great British Bake Off. He joined the beloved competition in 2020, replacing Sandi Toksvig and presenting alongside Noel Fielding, with Paul Hollywood, and Prue Leith serving as judges.
After three seasons and 51 episodes, Lucas announced his departure in 2022 because of scheduling conflicts with his other projects, including Fantasy Football League. At the time, he joked that he was “cheerfully passing the baguette on to someone else.” Alison Hammond took over for Lucas and still hosts the show today.
