Right-hander J.T. Ginn has landed on the 15-day IL with a right elbow impingement, the Athletics announced. Righty Jack Perkins is headed back to the big-league club. Perkins was just sent down yesterday when Joey Estes was recalled.
Any injury at this point in the year could be season-ending. Ginn hasn’t been ruled out for the rest of the year, though. His condition has improved recently, and there’s a chance he makes another start this season, per Martin Gallegos of MLB.com.
Ginn hasn’t pitched since August 26. He earned a win over the Twins in that outing, permitting four earned runs over six innings. The righty apparently came out of that start with an elbow injury. Ginn hadn’t been great from a run-prevention perspective lately, but he was giving the A’s length. He’d gone at least six innings in five of his last six appearances.
This is Ginn’s second trip to the injured list. He had a minimum IL stint shortly after the All-Star Break due to a blister. The injuries have halted what has been Ginn’s most effective season as a big leaguer. He’s posted a 3.71 ERA over a career-high 138 1/3 innings. Ginn’s xERA and xFIP are around 4.00, which is in line with his career norms. Part of his success has been fueled by a .258 batting average on balls in play.
While the results on contact are somewhat lucky, Ginn has done his part to limit damage. The righty has held opponents to a 35.4% hard-hit rate. That number was above 44% in each of his first two MLB seasons. He’s trimmed his barrel rate to 6.1% this year.
The main arsenal change for Ginn has been increased changeup usage. After throwing it just 9.4% of the time last season, he’s used it at a 20% clip in 2026. Opponents are hitting just .183 against Ginn’s changeup. The pitch has a +8 Run Value and a 25.3% hard-hit rate.
Perkins has flashed solid strikeout stuff, but he’s had a tough time with control. He had at least four walks in three straight starts before getting sent down. Perkins walked five in his most recent outing on Thursday.
With Ginn sidelined, Perkins could step back into the rotation. He’s made 13 starts and 20 relief appearances this season. Perkins has a 7.67 ERA as a starter, compared to a 4.76 mark out of the bullpen. Estes and Brady Basso can also cover multiple innings. It’ll likely be a mix of arms filling in for Ginn.
