The Rockies will be selecting the contract of infielder Vimael Machin prior to their game with the Cardinals. The Denver Gazette’s Kevin Henry was the first to report that Machin had a locker in Colorado’s clubhouse, and MLB.com’s Thomas Harding reports that Willi Castro is being placed on the injured list in the corresponding roster move. A 40-man roster move will also be required, unless Castro is being placed on the 60-day IL instead of the 10-day IL.
A season-ending placement for Castro may not be out of the question since Harding writes that Castro is dealing with plantar fasciitis in his left foot, as well as a sore right knee. Castro hasn’t played since Thursday, and given how little time is left in the regular season, the last-place Rockies might just opt to shut Castro down.
If this is indeed it for Castro’s 2026 campaign, he’ll finish with a .260/.331/.417 slash line and a career-best 15 home runs over 477 plate appearances. This translates to a modest 95 wRC+ when factoring in Castro’s favorable home environment at Coors Field, plus some good batted-ball luck in the form of a .336 BABIP.
Most of Castro’s playing time came at second base, but as expected, the utilityman saw lots of action at all four infield positions, plus a handful of games in left and center field. Machin has primarily played third base over parts of his four MLB seasons with the Athletics and Orioles from 2020-25, but he has experience at all of the infield positions. While he lines up as a replacement for most of Castro’s duties, playing time could be limited, as the Rockies are likely to prioritize younger players as they finish off another rebuilding year.
Machin signed a minor league deal with Colorado during the offseason, and he has hit .290/.371/.445 with 12 home runs over 488 PA for Triple-A Albuquerque while waiting for his first bit of MLB action in 2026. Despite those solid numbers, Machin only has a 96 wRC+, as he has also benefited from the hitter-friendly environment of the Pacific Coast League. He also hit very well in the Mexican League in 2023-24, but in the majors, Machin has batted just .204/.286/.264 in 373 career PA against big league pitching.
