People are out enjoying the Labor Day holiday weekend marking the unofficial end of summer in the city and suburbs.
The Chicago Labor Day Parade stepped off on the city’s Southeast Side on Saturday with dozens of floats, politicians, and families having fun along 112th Street.
“You gotta spend some time with the family,” said one parade goer. “Be outside with them just enjoy ourselves.”
Neighbors came out showing their support for labor organizations, including IBEW Local 134.
“It’s awesome right now it’s so amazing with the unity, this goes back and let’s everybody understand what this is all about,” said Tim Fitzgibbons, IBEW Local 134 President.
Other groups are fighting for collective bargaining rights and better wages for rideshare drivers.
“We’re just getting the signatures that we need to move forward and after that somewhere down the line sitting down and bargaining with both Uber and Lyft,” said James Fennell, part of the App Drivers Union Illinois.
Fennell told NBC Chicago they’re all in this together.
“Beautiful thing just to see the unions out here fighting for all the different causes and all that good stuff—it’s a celebration,” said James Fennell, App Drivers Union Illinois Brigade Member.
Celebrations are happening across the city this Labor Day weekend. People in Pilsen took part in another parade for Mexican Independence Day.
The United Merchants of Pilsen Chamber of Commerce organized the festivities on 18th Street. The crowds believed to be smaller compared to previous years.
“I just love to see the horses, the music, and the mariachi,” said one parade goer.
People also headed to the lakefront to soak up what’s left of summer. Longtime residents back on the city’s 10th ward said they’re just proud of Chicago’s workforce.
“I just hope everybody for the best, you know, good wages for everybody I really do,” said Denise Todorovich, resident. “I really do— we need equality for everybody.”
