The Outsiders is one of my mom’s favorite books. I first read her old copy as a moody teen, and it quickly became one of my favorites, too. It really resonated with me, particularly as someone who often felt deeply misunderstood. Later, when we were discussing it together, my mom told me a fun tidbit about the author S.E. Hinton: she wrote the coming-of-age novel when she was just 16-years-old. Moody teenage Molly was inspired, to say the very least.
And it’s true. When she was just 15 years old, author S.E. Hinton began writing The Outsiders, a book she would write the majority of and finish at 16, and eventually publish at 18 in 1967. Since its publication, the novel has sold more than 15 million copies worldwide in its first 50 years. It was also translated into over 30 languages.

In one of the first modern young-adult novels, the narrator is 14-year-old Ponyboy Curtis, who shares his experiences during a two-week stay in a city divided into two groups: working-class “greasers” and upper-class “Socs.” Ponyboy is a greaser, and he and his other gang members figure out how to handle the class-based violence in the community.

A heartbreaking story about class conflict, family, loyalty, identity and grief, the book has long resonated with teenagers since its initial publication and long thereafter. Because of its transcendent impact, Viking Books for Young Readers released an edition of the novel in honor of its 40th anniversary in 2007. Even cooler, the cover features the iconic book’s original artwork.
