Oklahoma couple charged after leaving 3 young kids home alone while they went to play Pickleball ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

A couple in Oklahoma was arrested and faed child neglect charges after police said they left their young children at home without adult supervision, raising questions about the age children are allowed to be at home without an adult present.

According to a release from the Glenpool, Oklahoma police department, officers received a 911 hang-up call Aug. 30, with the caller saying they suspected three children — ages 8, and 5 and 1 — had been left at a home without adult supervision.

Officers said the caller contacted the mother of the children, Feather Roberts, who stated that she and partner Andrew Dick were playing pickleball 20 minutes away, and that the kids were with sitters.

According to police, the caller went to the home and found the children were there without an adult. When officers responded to the home, they found the 8 and 5-year-old children watching television while the 1-year-old was asleep.

When Dick and Roberts returned to the residence, they confirmed they had been playing pickleball in Bixby, about 11 miles away.

When police asked how the children could contact them in case of an emergency, Roberts said the children had access to an iPad.

Police also said they learned the couple had arranged childcare for their youngest child, an infant, while the others remained at home without supervision. An initial investigation found this wasn’t the first time Roberts and Dick had left the kids home alone.

According to Glenpool police, the children were found safe and in good health, and the Oklahoma Department of Human Services was notified. Roberts and Dick were arrested on three counts of child neglect.

According to the state, there is no law or policy in Oklahoma for how old a child must be in order to be left home alone, but the state has the following recommended guidelines for parents:

Infants and children under 6 years of age should never be left alone without adult supervision. Generally, grade school children who demonstrate the ability to be responsible and mature may be left alone one or two hours during the day with access to a responsible adult.  Grade school children should never be left to care for younger children. Middle school children who demonstrate the ability to care for themselves without help may be left alone for up to four hours during the day and evening. Middle school children may care for one or two younger children if there is constant access to a responsible adult.
