The Monroe football team got its rings today after winning the New York State Championship back in December.
The ring ceremony was held at the James Monroe High School gym, and the celebration was a surprise, disguised by the school’s annual “Welcome to the ‘Roe” event each year.
The Red Jackets finished the 2025 season 12-0, beating Sleepy Hollow 34-0 in the state title game last year. Wide receiver Messiah Hampton and quarterback Pootie Cunningham led the charge for Monroe. Hampton caught six passes for 145 yards and a touchdown. Hampton is currently in his freshman year playing for the University of Oregon. Cunningham, however, is back for his senior year.
As for the ring, in Cunningham’s words, “It’s huge.”
The ring is decked out with the players’ last names and numbers, in addition to the Red Jackets’ record from the season. The rings wouldn’t have been possible without the help of Michael Taylor, the owner of the Chick-lil-A in Henrietta.
“”Glory2Glory came to me. We sat down and we were talking about the initial partnership. When they told me, hey, they didn’t have rings. I just put forth all my money to make sure they had rings,” Taylor said.
Head Coach Terrell Cunningham says the rings signify many years of hard work.
“These young men came together every day six days a week and they put in work, and, like I said they put their mind to a goal, and we were able to accomplish it,” Cunningham said.
Monroe is back for more this year. The Red Jackets’ quarterback is confident the team has the tools to repeat.
“”We did what we needed to do last year, and I feel like we can do it again,” Cunningham said.
