Soft Machine is inviting fans on a trip down memory lane with its latest release. Slightly All the Time Recordings, a massive 17-disc box set, is set for Oct. 30.
According to Louder, the Sony Music release was compiled by Esoteric Recordings’ Mark Powell and covers the Canterbury band’s five albums recorded during their Columbia Records era—1970’s Third, 1971’s Fourth, 1972’s Fifth, and 1973’s Six and Seven—all newly remastered from the original quarter-inch tapes.

The 14 CDs also include previously unreleased Fifth sessions, BBC recordings, and rare live performances, while three Blu-rays collect more than six hours of archival television footage. There is also a hardcover book with liner notes from Prog writer Sid Smith.
Nick Mason, drummer for Pink Floyd and a friend of the band’s, commented on the release, saying he can’t wait to dive into the set.
“Although Pink Floyd were to head down a very different musical path in the years to come, I do clearly remember being deeply impressed by the musicianship of Soft Machine,” Mason said. “That modern jazz influence was something I could only wonder at and certainly couldn’t emulate! I’m looking forward to reacquainting myself with some happy memories as well as good music.”
Formed in 1966, Soft Machine became one of the most influential English bands to emerge from the underground Canterbury scene. Composed of Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers, Mike Ratledge, and Daevid Allen, the group bridged psychedelic and progressive rock with avant-garde jazz fusion.
In 1968, Soft Machine toured with Jimi Hendrix, opening for the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Two years later, they became the first-ever rock band to perform at the prestigious BBC Proms Festival. By 1974, the band had fully embraced its jazz-rock identity, a period represented in the box set by its Montreux Jazz Festival performance.
Despite decades of lineup changes, Soft Machine has continued to tour and perform under the same name. They remain active today and just released their 13th studio album, Thirteen, earlier this year. The current lineup includes John Etheridge, Theo Travis, Fred Thelonious Baker, and Asaf Sirkis.
