Lost in all of the Bears’ injury discussion since camp opened is a player who was the topic of that discussion last season, but has had a quietly good camp and looks poised for a return to form: cornerback Jaylon Johnson.
Johnson missed most of last season with a groin injury and then core muscle surgery, but he’s been healthy and present in camp since the jump. On Wednesday, defensive coordinator Dennis Allen praised Johnson in particular for his performance over the last two weeks in joint practice settings against the Bengals and Titans. “The last two weeks, when you talk about the joint practice against Cincinnati, his mindset going into the joint practice versus Tennessee, I’ve seen a guy that’s taken a step forward. I think he probably feels more like himself, and I’ve been really pleased with what I’ve seen out of him over the last two weeks,” Allen said of the former All-Pro cornerback. “His leadership has come to the forefront a little bit, and that’s needed. We need him to play at a very high level for us to be successful. And I think he understands that. I think he accepts that challenge. I think he’s looking forward to it,” Allen continued during his press conference on Wednesday. While the secondary took two big hits during camp (Coby Bryant and Kyler Gordon), hearing that Johnson is 1) healthy and productive and 2) stepping into a leadership role on the defense is extremely encouraging. While one Jaylon is thriving, another received his walking papers today. Cornerback Jaylon Jones was released from injured reserve with a settlement from the team. Jones suffered a hamstring injury during the Bears’ preseason finale against the Titans on Saturday (via Brad Biggs on X). Elsewhere in the cornerback room, newcomer Clark Phillips III (who was acquired in the Gervon Dexter Sr. trade with Atlanta) met with the media today at Halas Hall. Phillips said he was excited to be in Chicago, and while he didn’t play with fellow corner Jaylon Johnson at Utah, he said he’s kept in touch with him since Johnson was drafted. One last cornerback note: Tyrique Stevenson was back on the practice field today as a full participant, a good sign for his availability heading into Week 1’s matchup with the Panthers next week. Ben Johnson spoke with the media on Tuesday and spoke glowingly about his quarterback, Caleb Williams, who has taken a step forward in their second year together. Larry Mayer had more on Johnson’s thoughts on Williams’ growth on the team’s official website today:As they enter second season together, Bears HC Ben Johnson has been impressed with QB Caleb Williams' focus and intensity. — David Kaplan (@thekapman) September 2, 2026 The D’Andre Swift hype train has been primed all month, and the Bears running back met with the media today and had some encouraging things to say, telling reporters at Halas Hall that he and the running backs room are looking to be explosive this season. Efficiency, when you’re talking about the run game, is four yards, five yards … explosive is where we want to be … 12 yards plus. That’s what we’re looking for every time. I know that’s what I’m looking for,” Swift said.
