ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Warmth, humidity, and favorable dynamics will lead to stormy weather today, with multiple threats. We have a Yellow Alert in effect due to the possibility of these storms becoming severe, with damaging wind gusts and excessive rain being the primary concern. Large hail and an isolated tornado are possible as well. There will be two rounds, with the first hitting this morning, then more widespread storms hitting later this afternoon/evening. In between these two rounds of storms, expect partly sunny, warm and humid weather with highs in the mid to upper 80s with heat index values possibly into the low 90s.
WINDS: Damaging winds are the primary concern. As of 5am the first storm of the day is just southeast of the Georgian Bay, heading southeast at 45 MPH. It is likely to dip into the Rochester and Genesee Valley area by around 8am. It may bring damaging straight line wind gusts, so be prepared. But the late afternoon/evening storms will be more widespread in nature, bringing a better chance for damaging wind gusts. As mentioned, most wind issues will be straight-line… Gusts up to 55-70 MPH… But tornado formation is still a possibility. See more on that below.
RAIN: There is a risk of excessive rain that could cause isolated to scattered flooding, with the greatest risk being in locations that will experience the heaviest of both rounds of storms, and in locations where storm training is possible, likely on the east side and in the Finger Lakes. 1-2″ of rain is likely with localized areas receiving up to 3″.
HAIL: Quarter to golf ball sized hail is also possible in the tallest and heaviest storms. This is most likely in the evening round of storms, but will be heavily localized.
TORNADO: Due to favorable wind shear, supercell thunderstorms and isolated tornadoes are possible in the evening round of storms, though the threat is lower than the others mentioned above. If you do receive a tornado warning, head to the center of the lowest floor of your home or another sturdy building, stay away from windows, and wait until the all-clear is given.
Additional scattered thunderstorms are possible overnight, which would only add to rainfall totals. A few more showers are likely tomorrow but overall it will be a much quieter day compared to today. Beautiful weather will then take over just in time for Friday and likely last all the way through Labor Day Weekend, with sunny skies, low humidity, and temperatures in the low to mid 70s.
