The Twins announced that right-hander Jeff Hoffman has undergone arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow, a procedure that involved debridement and the removal of a bone chip. The club expects the righty to begin a throwing program in eight weeks and be ready for the start of the 2027 season. Dan Hayes of The Athletic passed the information along.
Hoffman, 34 in January, was acquired from the Blue Jays at this year’s trade deadline. The Twins were in the playoff race at the time and decided to make a postseason push, grabbing Hoffman from the Jays as well as Dean Kremer from the Orioles and A.J. Minter from the Mets. Unfortunately, Minnesota went 21-30 in August and September and finished seven games back of a playoff spot.
That slide was no fault of Hoffman’s, as he pitched well after the trade. He tossed 18 innings, allowing five earned runs for an ERA of 2.50. His 15.6% walk rate in that time was quite high but he punched out 35.1% of batters faced. Combined with his time with the Blue Jays, he finished the season with a 3.55 ERA, 34.9% strikeout rate, 10.3% walk rate and 44.7% ground ball rate over 66 innings.
Hoffman’s three-year deal, initially signed with the Blue Jays, still has one more season remaining. He’ll make $11MM next year but the Jays are paying $3.75MM of that as part of the trade, leaving the Twins on the hook for $7.25MM.
The results have been volatile since the deal was signed. With the Phillies in 2023 and 2024, Hoffman tossed 118 2/3 innings with a 2.28 ERA, 33.4% strikeout rate, 7.4% walk rate and an 8.3% home run to fly ball rate. With the Jays in 2025, his ERA spiked to 4.37. His strikeout and walk profile was still good but 20% of his fly balls left the yard. He then was quite good in the playoffs, with a 1.46 ERA, though that performance will mostly be remembered for the game-tying Miguel Rojas home run in the ninth inning of Game Seven of the World Series.
In 2026, the home run spike normalized to a more normal 7.7% clip but Hoffman was snakebit by the balls that didn’t clear the fence. He had a huge .389 batting average on balls in play with the Jays prior to the trade. That pushed his ERA up to 3.89, despite strong peripherals. The Twins made a bet that Hoffman’s talent would overcome the 2025 home run spike and the batted-ball randomness of the first few months of 2026. As mentioned, Hoffman walked a lot of guys after the deal but was much more effective from a baseline run prevention perspective.
The Twins gave up prospects Dasan Hill, John Klein and Dameury Pena to get Hoffman and he should play a key role in next year’s bullpen as well. Hoffman’s recovery could be impacted by the upcoming lockout. Major League Baseball is expected to lock out the players once the collective bargaining agreement expires at the end of the day on December 1. At that point, players and team personnel can no longer communicate until the lockout is done. Assuming he is fine for 2027, Hoffman and Yoendrys Gómez project to be two of the club’s top late-game arms.
The Twins could add to that group this offseason. They don’t have a track record of investing lots of money in the bullpen. Their last multi-year deal for a free agent reliever was a two-year pact for Addison Reed in 2018. However, owner Tom Pohlad has been talking about increasing payroll, so perhaps that will give the front office some financial wiggle room to be more aggressive in that department.
They also might address the relief group via trade. They had a deal lined up at the deadline that would have sent Trevor Larnach to Houston for Bryan Abreu, though that deal was nixed by Astros owner Jim Crane. Larnach is still on the club and part of a crowded corner outfield mix. Abreu is now a free agent but the Twins could try to trade Larnach for someone else.
