Several businesses in Chicago were left to clean up on Tuesday after thieves broke in overnight, with windows of at least six storefronts in the city’s Southport Corridor shattered.
Surveillance video captured a burglary overnight at Bombastic Café on Southport Avenue. Video shows someone yanking the cash register only to realize it was empty.
The business’s owner told NBC Chicago someone used a brick to smash their way into his coffee shop. The windows were still boarded up on Tuesday. The burglar was in and out within seconds and went straight for the register.
“It doesn’t make sense, it’s a lot of work for nothing,” said the owner. “They might as well get a job.”
The owner said the thief was wearing a mask and even jumped over the counter before getting a signal to take off.
“It’s really coordinated because they beep their horn and that guy flew out the window,” he said. “It was kinda professional.”
A candy shop across the street near Southport and Grace was also targeted. Several owners told NBC Chicago they learned from investigators more than a dozen businesses in the Southport area and surrounding neighborhoods were hit in the middle of the night.
“The police think it’s a bigger crew than the ones that busted up these storefronts because it was simultaneously going on in other neighborhoods,” he said.
About a mile south, Modern Grill, a family-owned restaurant near Halsted and Belmont had their glass door broken into for the second time in two months.
“They hit the bottom of our door, they rolled the safety glass up they climbed into the vestibule then they threw it through the second door,” said Chris Karountzos, owner of Modern Grill.
Karountzos said even though the crew never made it inside, they left her with around $1,500 in repairs.
“What was the point, what are you doing — I don’t understand,” she said.
Her family restaurant was closed on Tuesday. They’ve been around for nearly 40 years. She’s considering leaving the city for good.
“I do feel helpless because I mean what can I do,” she said. “Do I need to live in my business?”
Police have not said how many people were involved in the crime spree and whether all the incidents are connected.
