Developed for swimming schools, aquatic centres, schools and community pools, the Anti Wave Swim Teaching Platform provides a stable, elevated teaching area within deeper water, allowing sections of an existing pool to be adapted for younger swimmers and beginners without the need for permanent structural changes.

Across the world, aquatic facilities are being asked to do more with the same water.

A single pool may host learn-to-swim programs in the morning, school groups during the day, squad training in the afternoon, and club or competition swimming in the evening. For operators, the challenge is increasingly not simply how much pool space they have, but how effectively that space can be adapted for different users.

Nowhere is that challenge more apparent than in learn-to-swim.

The Depth Problem

Modern competition and training pools are generally designed around the requirements of lap swimming, diving starts and major aquatic competition. Those same dimensions, however, can make sections of a pool unsuitable for young swimmers who are still developing confidence and fundamental aquatic skills.

For swim schools operating within existing facilities, this can create a practical limitation. Valuable lane space may be available, but the water is simply too deep for particular teaching groups. Instructors can consequently be concentrated into limited shallow-water areas while substantial areas of the pool remain difficult to utilise for beginner instruction.

Building a separate teaching pool is one solution—but it is an expensive one. Another is to make the existing pool more adaptable.

Creating Shallow Water Within a Deep Pool

Australian aquatic equipment innovator and manufacturer Anti Wave has been examining this problem as part of its continuing development of equipment for pool programming and aquatic facility operation.

The result is the Anti Wave Swim Teaching Stand—a removable, elevated teaching platform designed to create a stable, shallower standing area within an existing swimming pool.

Rather than permanently altering the pool structure, the system allows operators to temporarily transform deeper water into a more suitable environment for learn-to-swim instruction.

The concept is deliberately simple: make more of the pool usable, for more swimmers, for more of the day.

The platform provides young swimmers with an elevated underwater surface from which instructors can conduct lessons and skill development. When that section of the pool is required for lap swimming, training or other programming, the equipment can be removed.

For facilities facing increasing pressure on available water space, this type of flexible infrastructure can significantly change how a pool is programmed.

Designed for the Aquatic Environment

Although the concept is straightforward, equipment repeatedly exposed to chlorinated pool environments must be engineered specifically for long-term aquatic use.

The Anti Wave Swim Teaching Platform has therefore been developed for demanding commercial learn-to-swim environments, with materials and construction selected for durability, stability, corrosion resistance and repeated daily use. It is manufactured from powder-coated marine-grade aluminium, with marine nylon connectors and SS316L stainless-steel hardware, drawing on the same proven materials and construction technology used in Anti Wave’s Global Anti Goals, now supplied to 73 countries worldwide. The platform is designed to withstand prolonged exposure to chlorine, UV and the harsh conditions encountered in busy aquatic facilities.

The raised platform incorporates an extruded moulded non-slip standing surface, providing swimmers with a strong, stable and confidence-inspiring area from which to learn. A clear acrylic centre section with non-slip tape maintains visibility beneath the platform, adding an important safety feature for instructors and facility staff.

A key focus of Anti Wave product design is long-term durability. Our performance equipment is engineered for extended service life in demanding commercial aquatic environments, with robust materials and construction methods designed to outlast many conventional HDPE alternatives currently available. This longer-life approach helps facilities reduce replacement cycles, ongoing maintenance requirements and whole-of-life equipment costs.

Particular attention has also been given to flexibility in day-to-day operation. The top railing can be repositioned to suit different teaching requirements, installation positions and age groups, while optional non-marking wheels allow for easier movement on the pool deck and simpler installation and removal from the water.

The standard platform measures approximately 1200 mm long × 850 mm wide × 1250 mm high and weighs approximately 24 kg. In a standard 1.2-metre-deep installation, the teaching surface sits approximately 500 mm below the waterline.

Designed, manufactured and tested in Australia, the objective is not simply to create a temporary platform, but a durable piece of aquatic infrastructure capable of becoming part of a facility’s everyday learn-to-swim programming.

 

More Programs From the Same Pool

For aquatic operators, flexibility is becoming increasingly important.  A 50-meter competition pool represents a major investment in infrastructure, but competition may account for only a small percentage of its operating life.

The same body of water may need to accommodate learn-to-swim, school swimming, recreational programs, squad training, water polo, community programs and elite competition.

The ability to quickly reconfigure that space therefore has considerable value.

Removable teaching platforms are one example of a broader shift toward multi-program aquatic facilities, where equipment allows the configuration of a pool to change throughout the day rather than requiring every activity to have its own dedicated body of water.

Learn-to-swim infrastructure is increasingly part of the same conversation.

From First Lessons to the Starting Blocks

The importance of learn-to-swim extends well beyond teaching a child their first strokes.  It represents the beginning of the entire swimming pathway.

A young swimmer may begin by learning water confidence and basic skills on a teaching platform, progress into a swimming lane, join a squad and eventually stand on a competition starting block.  Most will never become elite swimmers—and that isn’t the point.

The same infrastructure supports water safety, community participation, fitness, school sport and lifelong involvement in aquatics.

For equipment manufacturers, this means thinking about the complete aquatic environment rather than treating competition, training and learn-to-swim as entirely separate markets.

Brisbane 2032 Puts Aquatic Legacy in Focus

That broader philosophy is particularly relevant as Australia prepares for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Plans for Brisbane’s future aquatic infrastructure have already placed considerable emphasis on what facilities will deliver after the Games—not simply during the weeks of Olympic competition.

The proposed National Aquatic Centre has been discussed in terms of supporting the aquatic pathway from learning to swim through to high performance.

It is an important distinction.

The long-term success of major aquatic infrastructure should ultimately be measured not only by the records broken or medals won within it, but by the number of people who use those facilities in the decades that follow.

That means designing pools capable of supporting an eight-year-old learning to swim on Monday morning and an international athlete training in the same water later that day. Flexible equipment can help bridge that gap.
