Junior Nationals qualifier Jack Mahaffey has announced his verbal commitment to stay in-state and swim at Miami University beginning in the fall of 2027. He publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:
I’m excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and swimming career at Miami University. Thank you to God, my family, teammates, and friends for supporting me along the way – especially Coaches Kyle, Ruslan, and Miller for helping me grow and develop as a swimmer. And a huge thank you to Coach Sam and Kevin for this incredible opportunity. Go RedHawks!
A senior at The Wellington School in Columbus, Mahaffey has been a member of his school’s varsity swimming team since his freshman year. He also trains year-round with Central Ohio Aquatics, where he primarily specializes in backstroke and the 50 freestyle.
The 2025-26 short course season saw Mahaffey drop more than three and a half seconds in the 200 back, over a second in the 100 back, and nearly a second in the 50 free. He clocked all of his current lifetime bests at the Ohio Tim Myers SC Senior Championships in March, swimming 48.14 in the 100 back, 1:50.19 in the 200 back, and 20.83 in the 50 free.
On the high school scene, he won the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Division II State title in the 100 back (48.38) in February, upgrading from bronze as a sophomore, and also placed seventh in the 50 free (21.21).
Beyond the short course swimming, Mahaffey has qualified and competed at Summer Junior Nationals (LCM) each of the past two summers. After touching 53rd in the 50 back and 55th in the 100 back in 2025, he rocketed up to 11th in the 50 back (26.32), 25th in the 100 back (57.35), 88th in the 200 back (2:12.38), and 144th in the 50 free (24.71) this past July. He holds PBs of 26.10, 56.79, and 2:08.54 in the backstroke events from Speedo Sectionals – Columbus a few weeks prior, while he time trialed an even quicker 24.46 in the 50 free at JNats.

Mahaffey’s current personal best in the 100 back would have placed fifth, while his times in the 50 free and 200 back would have qualified for the ‘C’ final, setting him up to be an immediate contributor with nearly two full seasons of training still ahead before he lines up at his first conference meet.
Mahaffey joins breaststroker/IMer Jack Langan, sprint freestyler/flyer Jamey Solt, and middle-distance freestyler/flyer Quinn O’Neill in committing to the RedHawks’ class of 2031 so far.
