By Gold Medal Mel Stewart on SwimSwam
In this GMM takeover of the SwimSwam Podcast we have Gretchen Walsh, fresh off her haul of seven medals at the 2026 Pan Pacific Championships, five golds and two silvers. And Pan Pacs was arguably her weakest overall competition of the year.
In 2026, Gretchen made the choice to travel and race fast everywhere: Beijing, Rome, Fort Lauderdale, U.S. Nationals and Pan Pacs. She noted that she took for granted all the racing she did as an NCAA star, and she wanted that experience back.
The results were impressive, but Gretchen is candid that she was not satisfied with her times at Pan Pacs. She talks through that frustration and explains how she evaluates a meet where the medal count says one thing but her own expectations say something else.
Gretchen did net one personal best time in the 100 free, 52.57. She adds that the 100 free matters, that she wants to be a factor in that event, hinting that she needs to dip into the 51s along with her teammate Kate Douglass.
Gretchen dives deep into the 50 fly. She came into Pan Pacs openly chasing Sarah Sjöström’s world record. Gretchen explains how much she wanted the record, where she believes the remaining time can come from, and what she thinks it will take to finally get there.
Then we get into one of the most fascinating moments of the meet. Gretchen arrived at Pan Pacs as the 50 free world record holder. Virginia teammate and training partner Kate Douglass broke that record in the prelims, 23.49, then came back and shattered it again in the finals with a 23.19.
Gretchen takes us inside that day, explaining what she was feeling, how she internalized losing the world record to a teammate and friend, and what she ultimately learned from the experience. That may be the most revealing part of this podcast. It is an inside look at how an elite absorbs disappointment, learns from it, and moves forward.
Gretchen’s going to the U.S. Short Course World Championships Trials. She plans to qualify there and go to Beijing. We’ll pick up with her again after that competition.
