Mercedes may still be sitting comfortably atop both Formula 1 championships, but Toto Wolff is warning that the cushions are getting thinner – and Monza could be where the pressure starts to bite.
The Silver Arrows have enjoyed a formidable opening to the 2026 campaign, winning eight of the first 12 races and building an 87-point advantage over Ferrari in the constructors’ standings.
Kimi Antonelli has also established a healthy 59-point lead over teammate George Russell and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton in the drivers’ championship.
But the landscape has shifted.
McLaren in particular has emerged as a growing threat, while Ferrari continues to apply pressure. Mercedes, meanwhile, has not introduced a major upgrade since the Canadian Grand Prix in May, with Wolff previously acknowledging the financial constraints imposed by the cost cap.
Mercedes bracing for a tighter fight
That makes the run into the second half of the season considerably less comfortable for Wolff, who believes the margins are now sufficiently slim for even a small error to have major consequences.
"Monza and Madrid begin an important period for us. The field has compressed to the point where several teams can win on merit, and the price of a mistake is much higher," said Wolff.
"We have put ourselves in a strong position in both championships, but nobody in our team is under any illusion about how difficult the next races will be."
The first obstacle arrives at Monza, where Mercedes has not tasted victory since Hamilton triumphed there in 2018. And Antonelli's homecoming is set to be particularly painful: the Italian will start from the back after Mercedes fits his car with a complete new power unit, despite the unit being no different in specification from those already available.
"For us, Monza begins with a challenge. Kimi will take a power unit penalty and start from the back of the grid. It's disappointing for him and for the fans who want to see him fighting from the front in his home race, but our sport doesn't reward sentiment."
A penalty with a bigger picture in mind
The decision is nevertheless being viewed through the lens of the championship rather than one race. Mercedes is effectively accepting short-term damage to strengthen its position over the remainder of the campaign.
"When you make decisions that benefit the championship campaign, sometimes you pay a short-term price. The objective now is straightforward: recover as many places as possible and maximise the points."
Antonelli's setback could place greater emphasis on Russell, who arrives in Italy after a strong showing at Zandvoort and will be looking to capitalize on his teammate's compromised starting position.
"On the other side of the garage, George arrives with good momentum after Zandvoort and will be looking to put himself firmly in the fight from the start of the weekend."

"Monza is an energy-poor track; you spend much of the lap asking everything from the power unit and don't have many opportunities to charge the battery."
"With the current regulations, that creates compromises that will need to be managed carefully. It is an interesting challenge and one that will likely lead to an exciting weekend."
For Mercedes, excitement may be welcome. What Wolff clearly does not want is complacency. The championship leaders have built themselves a formidable buffer — but with their rivals closing in, the luxury of making mistakes is rapidly disappearing.
