Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Rumours’ Re-Enters the Top 5
Released Feb. 4, 1977, Rumours arrived as Fleetwood Mac was coming off the success of its 1975 self-titled album, which had reached No. 1 in the U.S. But behind the scenes, virtually every relationship within the band seemed to be splintering.
Christine McVie and John McVie were divorcing after eight years of marriage. Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham were caught in an increasingly volatile relationship of their own, while Mick Fleetwood was dealing with the collapse of his marriage after learning his wife was having an affair with his best friend.
Somehow, all that upheaval became an 11-song album featuring “Dreams,” “Don’t Stop,” “Go Your Own Way,” “The Chain” and “You Make Loving Fun.”

The album went to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and remained there for an extraordinary 31 nonconsecutive weeks. “Dreams” also became Fleetwood Mac’s only No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.
The success was enormous, but even the band couldn’t have known just how long Rumours would stick around.
‘Rumours’ Has Spent More Than 3,500 Combined Weeks on the Charts
The album’s latest Billboard appearances are only a sliver of its staggering chart history.
According to Billboard’s current chart data, Rumours has now accumulated 490 weeks on Top Rock Albums, 699 weeks on the Billboard 200, 511 weeks on Top Album Sales, 494 weeks on Top Rock & Alternative Albums and 467 weeks on Vinyl Albums.
Add in its runs on Top Streaming Albums, Canadian Albums, Indie Store Album Sales and several international rankings, and Rumours has logged more than 3,500 combined weeks across 11 charts.
That’s a fitting legacy for an album whose future wasn’t exactly guaranteed while Fleetwood Mac was making it.
In a sprawling 2013 Mojo retrospective on the album, Fleetwood recalled just how precarious things had been before Buckingham and Nicks joined the group.
“Fleetwood Mac were practically finished in 1974,” he said. “What on earth would have happened to me, to all of us, if I hadn’t stopped there that day?”
Fleetwood was referring to the chance encounter that ultimately led him to Buckingham and Nicks, completing the lineup that would first record 1975’s Fleetwood Mac and then Rumours.
The latter album ultimately became one of the biggest-selling records in history, with more than 40 million copies sold worldwide.
The Album Has Made Some Remarkable Comebacks Before

In 2011, the album returned to the Billboard 200 following the Fleetwood Mac-themed episode of Glee. Then came an even bigger revival in 2020, when Nathan Apodaca’s viral TikTok video, featuring him skateboarding while drinking cranberry juice to “Dreams,” sent the album all the way back into the Billboard 200 Top 10.
That viral moment was remarkable enough on its own for an album then more than four decades old. Six years later, Rumours is back yet again.
This time, there doesn’t appear to be one viral skateboard ride or TV episode responsible for the resurrection. It’s simply an album that has demonstrated a peculiar ability to keep finding its way back into heavy rotation.
And with a No. 5 re-entry on Top Rock Albums, nearly half a century after Fleetwood Mac turned a collection of breakups, arguments and deeply personal songs into Album of the Year, Rumours isn’t merely hanging around.
It’s back near the top.
