KATHMANDU, Nepal — The death toll in the flooding along the Nepal and China border has surpassed 1,000. Rescue teams with search dogs are continuing to search for thousands of people still missing after water and landslides tore through communities along the Himalaya mountains last week.
Nepal’s disaster agency says 987 deaths have been counted, with 3,916 people missing, including 583 foreigners. Chinese authorities, in their latest update on Sunday, reported 16 deaths and 546 people still missing, including 261 foreigners.
In Nepal, rescuers are racing to reach hundreds of workers believed to be trapped inside tunnels at hydropower projects damaged by the floods. About 900 workers are missing, with roughly 500 believed to be trapped in tunnels. In China, rescuers are searching areas hit by mudslides, particularly around the Gyirong Port border crossing, which was destroyed.
At least 11,814 people have been rescued so far, according to Nepalese authorities. Emergency crews were using helicopters and other aircraft to reach stranded communities in areas where roads and bridges have been destroyed.
Groups in Rochester help with relief
The Bhutanese Community of Greater Rochester is collecting donations to support relief efforts after the flooding. In a post, the community group says this is a difficult time for Nepali-speaking communities across Rochester. The group is collecting donations of food and essentials at three locations in Rochester:

From our Bhutanese-Nepali community here in Greater Rochester, we stand together with Nepal in prayer, hope and solidarity.”
In addition, Elevate Nepal, an Arizona-based nonprofit founded by a Rochester native, is asking for donations to support its disaster relief efforts. The group mostly works with rural villages in Nepal to bring clean water, sanitation, and other essentials. You can donate to the group here.
In a post, Elevate Nepal said its team is coordinating with local partners to determine where its disaster relief efforts can be most effective. The group also said that one of the hard-hit communities is near a school it constructed:
“Trishuli Bazaar, one of the communities hardest hit by the floodwaters, holds a special place in our hearts. Situated near the Sarsyu school we constructed back in 2018, Resham and I spent extensive time there, getting to know local merchants and shopkeepers who helped supply our project. We are deeply saddened knowing that many of them have lost their lives. Our thoughts, prayers, and support are with the people of Nepal during this devastating time.”
