A fall event in McHenry County is taking on a new significance following the death of an American icon. A corn maze near Woodstock is Dolly Parton-themed, and it opens for the season Saturday.
“Up at the top, it says ‘Dolly,’ and it says ‘American Treasure’ because it is our 250th birthday for the United States,” said Brett Herbst, the owner of All Seasons Orchard. “We’re very honored to just honor her legacy.”
There are two entrances to the corn maze at All Seasons Orchard: easy and hard. But either way, guests will immerse themselves in the story of the country music legend.
“There’s about seven, eight acres to get lost in,” Herbst said.
Herbst actually started working on the maze three years ago. The orchard announced it the day before she died, with a shoutout from Parton herself.
“Grab your friends, gather up the family, come on out to one of my favorite farms for a little fun, laughter and a real good reason to get lost,” Parton said in the video posted to the orchard’s Facebook page.
At the maze, guests can take pictures with a large cardboard cutout of Parton and grab a passport that has Parton trivia questions. If a guest answers a question correctly, the passport will tell them whether to go right or left in certain sections of the maze.
“Her values just line up with our values as being farmers, and we love the country lifestyle, and just her values about giving back, (and) kids reading,” Herbst said.
He used a computer to help design the maze in the winter, then laid it out in the field in June, maintaining the corn and letting it grow ever since.
“We work with about 300 farms across the United States and Canada. In fact, I think there’s 18 other farms that we’ve done (mazes for) in the United States and Canada that have done Dolly Parton in their corn maze this year. So, kind of exciting,” he said.
The orchard’s done corn mazes for the last 31 years. The last few have showcased county music stars, including Lainey Wilson and Luke Bryan. This season, the orchard will donate to the Imagination Library and also collect donations.
“The corn maze and the orchards really (have) something for everybody, for teenagers, small kids, families, grandparents. It’s just a great place to come and relax. We’ve got great apples, great atmosphere, lots of activities and food.” Herbst said. “It’s kind of a big fall festival here.”
