MONROE COUNTY, N.Y. — The Monroe County Sheriff Police Benevolent Association (PBA) released a statement about the deputy-involved shooting that happened back on Aug. 9, resulting in a man dying from the shooting.
The PBA is the labor union representing the road patrol deputies and law enforcement professionals of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Police Bureau in Rochester.
Shooting information
Chief Deputy Michael Fowler said 911 received calls around 3:53 p.m. for a suicidal man at the motel. Deputies arrived within a few minutes and encountered the man, Gregory Allen Kase, armed with a box cutter, apparently attempting self-harm.
“Deputies made contact with him, gave him several directions to drop the weapon,” Fowler said.
“The subject was uncooperative and the deputies fired their weapons, striking the subject and unfortunately he did not survive.”
The New York State Attorney General’s Office is taking the lead in the investigation.
Statement from the PBA
The statement below comes from Richard Tantalo, the president of the PBA:
“The Monroe County Sheriff’s PBA solemnly acknowledges the gravity of the August 9th incidentinvolving two of our deputies. This tragic event deeply affects the deputies involved, theirfamilies, the family of the individual, and the entire Monroe County community.
“Our deputies faced a rapidly evolving and highly stressful situation, responding withprofessionalism and adherence to training and department policies. At no time did they actrecklessly or outside their lawful authority.
“We urge the public and media to respect the ongoing, thorough investigations by all agenciesinvolved and to withhold judgment until the facts are fully established.
“We must also address recent claims by attorney Elliot Shields, who has a history of filinglitigation against the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and our Deputies. Mr. Shields claims thatMr. Kase was deaf. He implies that this was a critical piece of information and one that theinvolved Deputies should have known. However, Mr. Kase’s family never communicatedanything regarding Mr. Kase having any difficulty hearing. The family didn’t mention it to 911, tohotel staff or to the responding Deputies. Multiple efforts were made to de-escalate, but Mr.Kase’s choices ultimately contributed to this tragic outcome.
“While we sympathize with the family’s loss, it’s crucial to recognize that our deputies actedsolely based on the circumstances and their duty to protect all lives, including their own.
“Monroe County Road Patrol Deputies serve with dedication, courage, and integrity. Theydeserve our respect and support as they navigate this difficult time.
“We stand firmly behind our deputies and remain committed to advocating for theirprofessionalism, safety, and justice.“
