In a week of really bad losses, today’s joins the list. It fits in. They’re like buddies. Bad losses just hanging out, having a great time, being a–holes.
Losing that game to that team at home on August 28 – even setting aside the week the Cubs have had – is just making me sick when I think about it.
OK, some credit to the Cubs’ bats for allllllmost coming all the way back in this one. That was a fun few minutes, and impressive work.
But, obviously, that comeback attempt was necessary because of the implosion on the other side of the ball that preceded it. I understand that David Peterson is a two-times-through, five-inning guy for the Cubs, and it has been working very well. But the firmness of that plan really burned the Cubs today, because Trent Thornton came in for the sixth and immediately got blown up. The bullpen was already back to being a big concern before today’s game. The Cubs cannot, cannot, cannot be losing games where their starting pitcher gives them a solid outing and the offense scores 8 runs.
It was not a banner day for the defense either, with some plays that really could’ve been made but weren’t, as well as a critical error that helped the Reds score the two runs that ultimately made the difference.
The Ankin Law: “Making it Personal” Player of the Game is, sigh, I don’t know. You can make a case for Seiya Suzuki or Pedro Ramirez in a losing effort, and the Reds got a wide distribution of contributions. I’m just really mad right now.
