Kyler Gordon, the Return of the Best Vibes, and the Beginning of a Redemption Arc ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

I see what you’re doing, Kyler Gordon.

And now, I want everyone to see it.

But first, a quick glance at Gordon’s production in the two games he has played in since returning to the Bears after a lengthy absence and a stint on injured reserve to start the season:

4 sacks 5 tackles-for-loss 3 quarterback hits 9 total tackles (7 solo)

Gordon nearly doubled his snap count on Thursday, playing 31 snaps (57.4% of the defensive plays) against the New England Patriots after playing just 17 snaps (30.9%) on Sunday in the win against the Atlanta Falcons. I’m not sure what the ideal pitch count will be for Gordon. However, I like the idea and execution behind how he has been deployed to this point.

What we have seen so far from Kyler Gordon is what I expected when the Bears hired Dennis Allen as their defensive coordinator. Allen has unleashed Gordon as a blitzer. In the process, he has unlocked Chicago’s best pass-rushing option. Gordon has been so good at generating pressure that I forgot that the team was playing without defensive end Montez Sweat for a second straight game. That is how good Gordon has been rushing off the edge. That said, it isn’t the only thing he is doing well.

KYLER GORDON HAD THE BEST WEEK 6 EVER VS. THE FALCONS

In Thursday’s win, one thing that stood out to me was Gordon showing an impressive ability to bluff the blitz, then drop into coverage. That isn’t easy, mind you. But Gordon is a natural at it. Plus, it adds a wrinkle to a Bears defense built around generating chaos at and around the line of scrimmage. After seeing how it worked on Thursday Night Football, I am certain that Gordon will goad some unsuspecting quarterback into throwing him a pick-six. I just hope Gordon catches it.

Kyler Gordon Is Back … And So Are the Good Vibes

In addition to upgrading the Bears’ defense by providing some timely pass rush, run-stopping, and coverage, Gordon’s return to the lineup has boosted morale. The vibes have never been better around this team. And I’ve got proof:

In the first video embedded above, Gordon and Colston Loveland are hanging out at Pizz’Amici (as friends who love a good pie do!) and engaging in a little bit of trolling while they’re at it. If you know, you know. It is lovely seeing teammates together away from the facility enjoying life and pizza. And in the second video, we’ve got Gordon nudging Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson to celebrate the team’s TNF win with a little Stanky Leg action.

Don’t think I don’t see what you’re doing, Kyler. Explosive plays on the field. Vibing with your teammates (in this case, one of the head coach’s favorite players) off-site. Being in the thick of it for the “Good, Better, Best!” after the game. This is what the beginning of a redemption arc looks like. This is what it looks like when you’re trying to get back into good graces. This is image repair 101. And I’m here for all of it. After all, no one loves a bounce-back story more than yours truly.

Do you remember what Gordon said after receiving a game ball from Johnson after the Falcons game? If not, let me jog your memory:

“I just wanna say, first off, thank God for the opportunity to be here with the boys. Appreciate you guys supporting me and letting me be back here. Let’s get it next week.”

In that moment, I understood how much it meant for him to be back on the field and with his teammates. Being away from the team and out of the lineup could have made for some icy times upon his return. Instead, Gordon was welcomed back with open arms. There aren’t grades or metrics that quantify vibes, which is a real shame. But if there were, the Bears would lead the league in them right now thanks in part to Kyler Gordon.
