The Chicago Cubs’ 150th anniversary weekend is here (did you forget about that celebration this year, IN ADDITION to the 10th anniversary of the 2016 World Series win? It’s a big year!). The second-oldest professional baseball team (stupid Redlegs … ), the Chicago White Stockings Colts Orphans Cubs have been around for a very long time. Strictly speaking, they began playing back in 1870 – 156 years ago – but became a charter member of the newly-formed National League in 1876, hence the 150th anniversary. Hey, we could also call this year the 150th anniversary of the Cubs’ first championship, since they won the National League that year.

More on the festivities this weekend, from the Cubs’ official release:

“The Chicago Cubs today announced plans for a weekend celebration at Wrigley Field, Saturday, August 29, through Sunday, August 30, commemorating the club’s 150th anniversary as a National League franchise. The weekend celebration will honor the players, people, places and traditions that have defined Cubs baseball since 1876 while recognizing the organization’s enduring connection to the neighborhood it has called home for more than a century.

The celebration begins Saturday, August 29, with the dedication of a new Founders’ Clock at the corner of Clark and Addison streets, marking the organization’s latest investment at Wrigley Field.
