Yes, Pete Crow-Armstrong runs a little hotter out there than most. But still. The level to which he erupted yesterday suggested to me that he’d seen something egregious when he was trying to throw off Eduardo Rodriguez by scampering down the line from third. Watching live, with a behind-the-pitcher view, it did look like ERod’s delivery was a little funky, but I was more focused on the catcher coming out beside the plate in a very unusual way. Surely that was not legal, right?
Well, turns out that part didn’t even matter. Because what PCA saw, and replays showed clearly, was the balkiest balk that ever balked:

That’s the easiest balk call that exists, and somehow all four umpires missed it. After the game, they essentially admitted as much, conceding that, yes, the pitcher did step off the rubber mid-wind-up. Should’ve been a balk and run for the Cubs.

After the game, as I said, the umpires copped to the mistake. Craig Counsell said it might be a tough call for the home plate ump and the second base ump, but it’s an “easy call” for first and third. How they both missed it is beyond me.
For his part, PCA wasn’t about to apologize for the blow-up, doubling-down on his (correct) call-out of the umps, while also noting that Rodriguez was pitching extremely well, and that he was probably extra frustrated because he knows he didn’t have a great game. It wasn’t all just pointing fingers.
In fact, I think the whole context is needed on his comments, rather than just the pull quotes I’m seeing out there. I’ve embedded his full availability via Marquee at the bottom of the post. And here’s what PCA actually said:

So when a guy is shoving it down your throat, pause, you’ve got to find any way you can to make something happen. And that’s exactly what I was trying to do, and I executed. It would have been nice if the umpires did the same.
I get it from [the home plate umpire’s] point of view at home plate. Tough to see with two people standing in front of you, and all you’re trying to do is call the right pitch. But I don’t know how you miss somebody starting their motion, then stopping it and stepping off ….
So if I’m going to sit here and go through all this stuff – like I should have done better today, shouldn’t have punched out three times, should have had better at-bats all series, I was pretty much non-existent – I think you guys just saw my frustration from the last three days come out. And I’m going to stick by it and say rightfully so, because I didn’t appreciate the other umpire coming up to me after Q had already calmed the situation down.
It’s just – I think they find new ways to screw something up every day. So there you go ….
Did they admit they missed it? Well, then it’s a 1-0 ballgame going into the next inning, and you never know – Jordan Lawlar hits a homer, great swing. I’m just glad to see him on the field after yesterday’s scary moment. I’m a big fan of his as a person – we kind of came up together.
They played really good baseball the last two days. With a lot of the games we’ve won, coming back late in games, I can obviously sit here and not be happy with the result, but I appreciate the way they competed this series.”
Pretty much nails it, right? An inexplicable screw-up that may or may not have changed the course of the game. Credit to the opponent. Critical analysis of his own performance. He’s probably going to be fined for the “screw something up every day” comment, but whatever. I think it was fair for him to blow off some extra steam after such an obvious and impactful mistake.
