SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif. (KEYT) – George Rodriguez Recio of Grover Beach has been sentenced to 73 years to life in state prison for the sexual assault of four people.
"This sentence cannot undo the profound harm inflicted on these victims or restore the years of safety and peace that were taken from them," San Luis Obispo County District Attorney Dan Dow noted. "But it does ensure that this defendant will be held accountable and no longer be able to victimize others in our community. The courage of these four victims—to come forward, tell the truth, and endure an extraordinarily difficult legal process—made this result possible."
On June 3, 2026, a local jury found the 73-year-old guilty of 20 felony counts connected to the repeated sexual abuse of four survivors stated the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney's Office in a press release Tuesday.
During the trial, jurors were presented evidence that Recio had abused the sexual assault survivors from 1996 through 2024, and that three of the survivors were between the ages of six and 12 when the abuse occurred and one survivor was 25 at the time of the abuse detailed local prosecutors.
According to the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney's Office, the crimes all occurred in Grover Beach and the investigation was handled by the local police department alongside investigators at the District Attorney's Office.
On Tuesday, Aug. 25, Judge Michael Frye sentenced Recio to 73 years to life in state prison, ordered he register a sex offender for the remainder of his life, and issued a criminal protective order prohibiting Recio from contacting the survivors of his crimes noted the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney's Office.
Survivors of Recio's crimes were allowed to address the court during Tuesday's sentencing hearing and a victim advocate read the following statement on behalf of the youngest survivor:
"I am mad that you betrayed me and my trust. You were my friend. You were my Tío Pepe. Now you are my worst nightmare. You are the monster behind the closed door. Today, I create my own peace."
The District Attorney's Office made special note that the survivors received support from Victim Advocate Dona Reed and Witness Coordinator Kellie Navarro with the Christopher G. Money Victim Witness Assistance Center and anyone who had survived similar crimes can seek confidential support and assistance through the same office.
"Today belongs to these survivors," District Attorney Dow continued. "Their voices were heard, their rights were honored, and their strength helped secure accountability. Our criminal and victim justice system must never lose sight of whom it is designed to serve: victims and survivors of crime. We are grateful to the jury for its careful consideration of the evidence and for delivering justice in this case."
