Ethan Hawke is shocked he never dated Drew Barrymore and wasn’t afraid to let her know it during his Oct. 16 appearance on her talk show, The Drew Barrymore Show. During their sit-down interview, which also happened to be the first time he met the actress, the star of The Weight, 55, admitted he was always “aware” of her presence.
“I can’t remember a time in my life when I was not aware of you,” he said, before Barrymore, 51, excitedly responded, “That’s how I feel about you!”
“What I can’t believe is that we never dated, you know? I mean…” Hawke added.
“Where were you?” the giddy host jokingly replied. “And by the way what me and every other girl on the planet wouldn’t have given to date you. Where the Hell were you?”
View this post on InstagramHawke further revealed that “there was a many a night, where I went like — this would be circa the ‘90s, I would be going to a party and I’d think, ‘Maybe Drew will be there.’”
After Barrymore asked him why he didn’t “just pick up the phone,” he replied, “I wanted to play it cool. I wanted it to happen organically. I thought, you know, something magic would happen.”
“And look what happened — nothing!” Barrymore acknowledged, as Hawke pointed out that they were now “meeting on a talk show.”
Despite never running into each other in the past, Hawke and Barrymore were two of the biggest movie stars in the ’90s. He starred in various popular features, including Reality Bites, Gattaca and Great Expections, while she starred in the hit films, Poison Ivy, Boys on the Side and Scream.
Hawke, did however, end up marrying another ’90s star: actress Uma Thurman. The former couple, who were married from 1998-2005, share daughter Maya Hawke and son Levon Roan Thurman-Hawke. After connecting a year after after his divorce, Hawke went on to marry his children’s former nanny, Ryan Hawke, in 2008. They also share two children, Clementine Hawke and Indiana Hawke.
Barrymore found her own love stories when she was previously married to bar owner Jeremy Thomas and comedian Tom Green. She married her third husband, Will Kopelman, in 2012. The couple divorced in 2016 and share daughters, Olive and Frankie Kopelman.
