The day started with free haircuts, followed by school supply distribution, which served as a big help for parents who are tackling the back-to-school checklist.

As NBC Chicago previously reported, the district has been facing a $732 million deficit that led to layoffs.
The Chicago Board of Education redirected $100 million in funds to help bring staff back, but that has yet to happen, and many schools are starting with vacant positions left unfilled.
The district hopes to receive more funding from the city or state, but that is not guaranteed.
What is certain is that the first bell will ring on Monday morning.
Mayor Brandon Johnson and CPS CEO Dr. Macquline King will greet parents and students, eager to get the school year started.
Johnson on Sunday solidified the city’s commitment to collaboration with CPS.
“We’re going to continue to work with our state partners as well to make sure that our school district is fully funded, but it’s not just about Chicago, right,” he said. “As the cuts come down from the federal level, local government and state government really has to fill in the gaps.”
A key piece of information that will be revealed this year is enrollment numbers.
After two years of steady growth, numbers dipped last year.
Voters will also decide the makeup of the school board this year, with all 21 seats up for grabs this fall.
