After a European Championships that saw legendary Swedish sprinter Sarah Sjostrom come away with a pair of medals, the now 30-time European long-course medalist says that, after all she has been through this past year, she is thrilled to still be able to compete at the highest levels of the sport.

In an interview with SVT, Sjostrom shared her joy of competing again, less than a year after giving birth to her son Adrian in an ambulance outside of a hospital.

“Well, it’s really amazing that I’ve managed to get back to this level and win two medals at the European Championships less than a year after giving birth. I’m very proud that I dared to do it.” Sjostrom said in an interview with SVT. “It is my curiosity that drives me forward. I have never forced anything, and I’ve had a very good collaboration with my coach all the way through.”

Sjostrom touched on what she and her coach, Antonio Lutulla, have worked on, given Sjostrom’s physical abilities after having her son, sharing that she is not fully back to physical training just yet.

“Antonio Lutulla, who designed the training program, and I’ve worked with my current physical capabilities… I’m not back to full training yet, neither in the gym nor in the pool.”

Sjostrom is one of the most decorated swimmers in history and has continued to shine in the biggest moments throughout her illustrious career, which includes 18 European Championship golds, tying her with Germany’s Franziska van Almsick as the winningest woman ever at the European Championships. The most recent of which came in Paris when she won the 50 butterfly in 25.05. She also finished runner-up in the 50 free in Paris, behind Katarzyna Wasick of Poland (23.84) by two one-hundredths of a second in 23.86.

“I’ve just worked with what I have and somehow managed to find that extra gear when it’s time to compete,” Sjostrom said. “I don’t really know where that energy comes from… absolutely [I] outperformed in competition compared to what I do in training, so it feels awesome… I’ve found a good level.”

Just over a month after giving birth, Sjostrom was already back in the water training, though it was not as structured. In February, Sjostrom shared that she was back in the water with her eyes and training focus set on the European Championships.

Her first race back came in April at the Malmsten Swim Open Stockholm, where she finished 2nd in the 50 free in 24.36.

Sjostrom pointed out that the competition will only get faster and more difficult over time, but she feels she will be even better prepared when the time comes.

“The competition will only get tougher next year, but I think that I’ll be perhaps even more ready to compete at a high level by then,” Sjostrom added. “But it feels fun to have been able to get back to this level now, and then we’ll see how I can find a way to get a bit stronger for next year. “
