That undercut Panziera’s record from the 2019 Italian Championships – also on a medley relay leadoff – by 0.17 seconds, and was Curtis’ fourth Italian record of the week. She lowered her own 50 free last night as she won bronze in 23.99, and set the world record in the 50 back in both the semi-finals and the final.
She led off for Italy in the women’s 4×100 medley relay heats this morning, moving from her normal spot on the anchor leg, getting out to a huge lead in lane 1 of the second heat. She was one of only three women to break 1:00 this morning.
She now ranks 10th in the world this season, and 9th on the European all-time list.

Compared to Panziera’s previous record, Curtis was out far faster, outlining her credentials as a sprinter. Panziera owns the Italian record in the 200 back, and her back-end speed was evident on the second 50, but Curtis had built up too much of a gap with a 28.07 opening 50.

She began training at Virginia last fall, and has had a phenomenal freshman season in the NCAA. She became the fastest freshman in history on the 50 free with a 20.74 to take second behind Torri Huske at the NCAA Championships, and clocked backstroke times of 22.73 in the 50 and 49.47 in the 100, both on medley relay leadoffs.
She may demolish all of those marks next season, having shattered the women’s 50 back world record three days ago in 26.56, and is eyeing her sixth medal of the meet in tonight’s final.
She won gold on the 50 back (26.56), bronze in both the 50 free (23.99) and 100 free (52.72), and delivered head-turning splits of 52.29 and 51.79 as the women’s 4×100 free relay won silver and the mixed 4×100 free relay won bronze.
Curtis did not swim the individual 100 back, however her time this morning would have earned her silver in last night’s final, 0.02 seconds ahead of Pauline Mahieu.
It remains to be seen whether Curtis remains on the leadoff for tonight’s final. Federica Toma was Italy’s top individual finisher in the 100 back with a 1:00.50, while their fastest freestyle splits from swimmers other than Curtis are a 53.37 from Alessandra Mao and a 53.59 from Emma Virginia Menicucci, over a second and a half slower than Curtis’ 51.79 split from the mixed 4×100 free relay.
