Over the last three-and-a-half days of competition we have seen a few world records, a few more U.S. Open records, and new meet records in nearly every event.
Tonight there are eight individual events and two relays in store, and we already saw a world record in the prelims.
The meet will open with the 200 IMs where Alex Walsh and William Petric are the respective top seeds. On the women’s side, world record holder Summer McIntosh is still the favorite to win even though she has been slightly off this week, and on the men’s there were three other men within 13 hundredths of Petric this morning who could take the gold.
The women’s 50 freestyle will see Kate Douglass and Gretchen Walsh race head-to-head after they have been trading the world record like a hot potato over the last few months. Douglass picked it up this morning, swimming 23.49 to earn the top seed for the final.
The men’s 50 free will see Australia’s Jamie Jack as the top seed, though the event is much closer than the women’s and most of the athletes in the ‘A’ final could walk home with the gold medal.
Douglass will be back in the water shortly after the 50 free in the women’s 200 breaststroke, which is scheduled to start just 24 minutes after the 50 free final. She is seeded 2nd to Japan’s Kotomi Kato.
In the men’s 200 breaststroke, world junior record holder Shin Ohashi is the top seed in 2:08.90 and will still be attempting to take down his own junior record time of 2:06.59 from earlier this year.
The men’s 1500 free and the women’s 800 free will close out the meet. In the men’s 1500 free, Bobby Finke will be taking the water as the top seed, though he is no longer the world record holder as Germany’s Johannes Liebmann swam 14:26.79 at the European Championships earlier today.
Katie Ledecky is the top seed in the women’s 800 freestyle, but Lani Pallister, the 2nd seed, has been exceptional in Irvine and will not let Ledecky have the win easily, which means it could be one of the most exciting events of the meet.
Finally, the meet will wrap up with the men’s and women’s 4×100 medley relay. The American women have broken the world record a few times, and with a slightly new lineup, they will be hoping to do it again tonight.
