‘A’ Final Qualifiers:

Katie Ledecky (USA), 4:03.48 Erika Fairweather (NZL), 4:04.50 Kennedi Dobson (USA), 4:05.10 Lani Pallister (AUS), 4:05.22 María Fernanda Costa (BRA), 4:06.63 Moesha Johnson (AUS), 4:07.75 Ichika Kajimoto (JPN), 4:07.92 Fan Yaqi (CHN), 4:08.36

Summer McIntosh missed out on the 400 free ‘A’ final at the Pan Pacific Championships this morning, 12 months on from winning her first world title in the event.

She touched 3rd in her heat in 4:08.56, with Fan Yaqi outsplitting her by over a second on the final 50 to beat her to the wall by 0.20 seconds. That proved to be the race for the final spot in the final, one made up of the fastest eight athletes from this morning with no swimmers pushed out by being third-fastest from their nation.

McIntosh was unhappy after her individual 200 free on day 1 here in Irvine, after winning silver in 1:53.87 behind Lani Pallister‘s 1:53.65. She was also just 1:55.82 on the second leg of the women’s 4×200 free relay for Canada, splitting 55.93/59.89 to miss her individual time from the day before by two seconds.

The Canadian did win the 400 IM last night in a new Championship record of 4:28.01, and seemed to just misjudge the heats this morning. Swimming in the final heat, she did have the luxury of knowing what times the swimmers before her had posted.

McIntosh ranks first in the world this season by nearly four seconds, having clocked a 3:55.37 at the U.S. Open in December which stands as the #2 swim in history. Three of the top five swimmers this season will be in the ‘A’ final tonight.

McIntosh did withdraw from the Canadian Trials through illness, having broken the 200 fly world record on the first day. She swam the 400 free heats there but withdrew from the meet before the final.

This will be the first major final not to feature McIntosh since the 2019 World Championships, when she was just 12 years old. With the 200 IM still to come for her tomorrow, she may decide to scratch the ‘B’ final tonight to focus on winning gold there.
