Rugby league bosses in the UK are expected to reject a £30 million initial investment offer from the NRL but will listen to better offers in negotiations, sources have told The i Paper.
Rugby League Commercial (RLC) confirmed in a statement on Thursday that the NRL had submitted a first offer, which had been communicated to the Super League clubs, with “details of it remaining confidential”.
The i Paper understands the NRL has offered around £6 million per year, over five years, to own 50 per cent of RLC, the joint venture between the Rugby Football League (RFL) and Super League that controls the commercial, marketing, digital and major events rights for rugby league in the UK.
Under the proposal, the NRL would control all commercial rights to Super League, including television broadcasting.

The NRL’s offer values RLC much lower than what Deloitte, hired as a strategic advisor in April, and other interested parties are understood to have priced it at.
But negotiations are understood to be far from over and will now continue with the NRL before RLC puts any proposal to the Super League clubs for approval. At the same time, talks with Sky Sports over a new television broadcasting deal, with the current contract finishing at the end of this year, have now been put on hold.
It is understood internal meetings have been set in the UK for 20 and 27 August for RLC and Super League to deliberate over the NRL’s proposal.
One involved party told The i Paper that the clubs were “miles off a vote” at this stage.
Another claimed the initial NRL offer seemed to be a negotiating tactic and that the overall response from the clubs was “mixed”.
“I think it feels like a starting block to me, not a final solution,” he said.
“You’ll see the clubs aligned with NRL all along, looking to accelerate [talks]. Others, not aligned with the NRL, are looking to deliberate.
“It feels like an official starting point… a feeling out [by the NRL].”

One involved party insisted the Super League clubs need to get into the finer details of the proposal as quickly as possible and with “an open mind”.
“The clubs know that the first offer from the NRL will not be the best,” he said.
It is believed the NRL is confident it could earn more by selling Super League’s broadcast rights than what the RFL is currently getting for them, which is around £21.5 million a year from Sky. The NRL recently announced a historic seven-year broadcast deal with DAZN, Channel 9 and Sky NZ worth around £2.65 billion.
