Although her meet record of 25.61 was broken in the very next heat by Kate Douglass (and then Douglass’ record was lowered by Gretchen Walsh in the heat after that), Ruck also got her hands on the Canadian Record, lowering Penny Oleksiak‘s nine-year-old national mark of 25.62 set at the 2017 World Championships.
The performance marks a drop of one-tenth off Ruck’s previous best time of 25.71, set en route to a 13th-place finish at the 2025 World Championships.
In a post-race interview with CBC Sports’ Devin Heroux, Ruck casually referred to there being two years to go until the LA Olympics—and in her career.
“There’s only less than two years now until LA and my career,” Ruck told Heroux in Irvine. “I feel like it all ties together in what feels like a celebration and looking forward to, in two years’ time, wrapping it up with close friends and family.
“Having fun along the way in the journey and just trusting that everything will come together in the end.”
Given she hadn’t spoke about retirement before, Heroux followed up, and Ruck confirmed she plans to hang up her goggles after the 2028 Games.
“I don’t know if we’ve talked about it, but in my head that’s the feeling,” Ruck said about retiring in two years. “It feels like a good time.”
Ruck is currently based out of Swimming Canada’s High Performance Centre in Vancouver.
If she were to qualify for the Canadian Olympic team in 2028, it would be Ruck’s fourth appearance at the Games, having represented Canada in Rio (2016), Tokyo (2021) and Paris (2024).
She’s a four-time Olympic medalist, claiming a pair of relay bronzes in Rio and then one relay silver and one bronze in Tokyo, and she’s also piled up a combined 16 medals across the World Championships in both short course and long course.
The last time the Pan Pacs were held in 2018, Ruck became the most decorated Canadian ever at a single edition of the meet with five medals, including winning gold in the women’s 200 free. Earlier that year, she won a record-tying eight medals at the Commonwealth Games.
Over the next three and a half days, in addition to tonight’s final of the 50 fly and likely the mixed medley relay, Ruck is entered in the 50 free, 100 free, 100 back and 100 fly.
