A second Chicago facility has been ordered to stop accepting human remains after more than 50 decaying bodies were found at a Southeast Side funeral home last week.
According to the Illinois Comptroller’s Office, Bohemian National Cemetery has been ordered to stop accepting human remains after investigators were alerted to possible violations of laws concerning improper storage of bodies at the site.
Investigators say the cemetery has complied with that request, and that an investigation is ongoing into the matter.
According to a press release, the remains of 35 individuals were being housed at Bohemian National Cemetery, with “multiple equipment failures” reported by state investigators and some human remains “not being maintained at the proper temperature.”
The remains in question have been cremated according to state officials, and those remains have been returned to family members.
An investigation remains ongoing, and state officials are discussing potential disciplinary action against the cemetery. State officials say the cemetery has been fully cooperative with their investigation.
The new closure follows the horrifying discovery of dozens of decaying bodies at the South Chicago Chapel last week. Officials say at least 56 sets of human remains were found to be improperly stored at the facility, with nearby residents complaining of foul odors for months and loved ones demanding answers over the whereabouts of their family members whose remains were handled by the funeral home.
Johanna Morgan, the funeral director, had her license suspended by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Her husband also had previous violations.
Last year, the Illinois Comptroller’s Office shut down the couple’s crematorium in Chicago Heights, alleging bodies were found piled on top of each other.
“We didn’t wait for some long drawn out process to take place, we immediately shut them down from taking additional bodies,” Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza said in a statement.
More than 50 bodies were found, according to state records, kept unrefrigerated in deplorable conditions like rat and maggot infestations.
