The National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) in Egypt issued a statement on Friday clarifying concerns raised about mobile phone lines registered in the names of some citizens without their knowledge, following a shocking court ruling.
Over the past few days, social media has been abuzz with posts from people who discovered phone numbers registered under their IDs that did not belong to them.
This controversy first erupted after university student Amr Emara reported that he had somehow received a 25-year prison sentence in absentia for drug trafficking, after it was discovered that a mobile phone number registered in his name had appeared in the case investigation.
The student explained that he had registered the phone line at the request of a friend’s sister to use it for activating certain services, before it was transferred to someone else without his knowledge.
His family confirmed that they were unaware of the case or any charges against him.
Inform the authority, NTRA advises
The NTRA confirmed that if any citizen discovers a mobile phone line registered in their name that does not belong to them, they have the right to file a complaint with the authority.
The NTRA will then investigate and verify the validity of the line registration procedures and the mobile company’s compliance with regulations, taking the necessary measures if any violation is proven.
The authority also noted that citizens have the right to report any matter to the relevant investigative authorities if they deem it necessary.
The NTRA stressed that simply registering a phone line in a person’s name does not in itself establish their legal responsibility for actions taken using it, if it is proven that the line does not belong to them or was not in their possession or under their actual control.
Verifying user identity
It affirmed that legal responsibility is personal and is determined according to the facts, evidence, and the results of investigations, without prejudice to the jurisdiction of the investigative and judicial authorities.
The statement explained that the NTRA continues to review and develop the regulations governing the registration and activation of mobile phone lines, while intensifying its audit and inspection of mobile operators and imposing the prescribed penalties upon detecting any violations.
This is in addition to enhancing methods for verifying user identity, including the biometric verification system, which contributes to improving data accuracy and strengthening the security of telecommunications services.
The authority called on citizens to regularly check the numbers registered in their names through the “My NTRA” application and to immediately report any unfamiliar lines.
It affirmed its commitment to continuing to take all necessary measures to protect user rights and ensure the integrity of the telecommunications system.
