In a courageous and exhausting journey, a Polish swimmer achieved history last weekend.
Bartlomiej Kubkowski on Sunday became the first person to swim across the Baltic Sea from Sweden to Poland, which was a nearly 100-mile quest.
Kubkowski began the journey on Friday in Kaseberga, Sweden and finished in Dziwnow, Poland, capping off a nonstop swim that took more than 55 hours to complete.
It was Kubkowski’s fifth attempt at completing the swim. Last year, in his fourth try, he was pulled unconscious from the water roughly seven miles from the finishing point.
In addition to Kubkowski, Polish swimmer Karolina Szczepaniak attempted to become the first woman to finish the swim, but she was pulled from the water about 25 miles from the finish.
Kubkowski didn’t sleep during the entire journey and was given food and water on a pole by an accompanying boat, which he wasn’t allowed to touch at any point.
He had to arrive on the beach under his own power and stand without assistance for the swim to be official, according to reports. Kubkowski managed to do so, but was obviously exhausted at the end.

The swim served as a fundraiser for “Cancer Fighters,” an organization that helps fund research and treatments for childhood cancer.
Kubkowski helped raise nearly $190,000 in his swim for the organization.
