And while nothing on the August slate looks set to rival them when it comes to financial success, there are nonetheless some very exciting new releases this month in all sorts of different genres.
Elsewhere, there's director Matt Johnson's film based on the early years of the late celebrity chef and author Anthony Bourdain, a new live-action/animation hybrid starring a beloved Looney Tunes character and an intriguing blockbuster led by Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor.

The Summer Book
Glenn Close stars in this adaptation of an acclaimed 1972 coming-of-age novel by Finnish author Tove Jansson – the creator of the Moomins.
It follows a young girl named Sophia (Emily Matthews) who spends the summer with her father (Anders Danielsen Lie) and grandmother (Close) on a small island in the Gulf of Finland, as the family grapples with the recent death of Sophia's mother.
The End of Oak Street
This intriguing sci-fi survival film from It Follows director David Robert Mitchell is led by Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor – who play two suburban parents whose family are thrown into a very unusual scenario.
A mysterious cosmic event uproots their entire street to a location where prehistoric creatures roam, with the family forced to stick together as they try to navigate their survival.
Tony
Dominic Sessa stars as late celebrity chef and author Anthony Bourdain in this coming-of-age biographical drama set over the course of one summer in 1975, in the small town of Provincetown in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, when he was 19-years-old.
Directed by Matt Johnson – who has already had a hit on his hands this year with Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie – the impressive cast also includes key roles for Antonio Banderas, Leo Woodall and Emilia Jones.
Sunny Dancer

Lockwood & Co's Ruby Stokes and Peaky Blinders star Conrad Khan are among the other camp members, while there's also space in the cast for the likes of Jessica Gunning, James Norton, Neil Patrick Harris and Shalom Brune-Franklin.
Lady
This satirical mockumentary from writer/director Samuel Abrahams sees Sian Clifford star as a narcissistic aristocrat named Lady Isabella, who demands that a camera crew film her entire life.
The film originally premiered at last year's London Film Festival – where it received some warm reviews – and now finally makes it to cinemas.
Teenage Sex and Death At Camp Miasma
I Saw the TV Glow writer/director Jane Schoenbrun returns with another acclaimed horror featuring many of their established trademarks – this time starring Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson.
Einbinder stars as a young queer filmmaker who has been hired to reboot an old slasher franchise and goes on a surreal journey of discovery after travelling to meet the actress who played the final girl in the original movie, played with scenery-chewing relish by Anderson.
Stop! That! Train!

The synopsis teases: "Two stewardesses must save the day when a catastrophic storm threatens to derail a high-speed train."
Insidious: Out of the Further
The sixth instalment of the hit horror franchise introduces a young mother named Gemma (Amelia Eve) who discovers she can travel to the Further, the purgatorial realm of lost souls that has featured in the other movies.
The official synopsis reads: "When something evil comes after her, she realises she can bring what lives there back to the real world. Once the demons realise her power, our world becomes their playground."
Coyote vs Acme
This live-action/animation hybrid starring Looney Tunes favourite Wile E Coyote alongside Will Forte and Lana Condor was rescued by small distributor Ketchup after previously being canned by Warner Brothers.
It follows the aforementioned toon after he decides to hire a billboard lawyer to sue the Acme Corporation – blaming the company and its products for failing him in his dogged pursuit of the Roadrunner.
The Dog Stars

It follows a former civilian pilot (Elordi) and Marine (Brolin) in the aftermath of a devastating flu pandemic that has almost eradicated humanity as they confront outside threats and hold onto the possibility of a better life beyond where they currently live.
Bitter Christmas
The new film from veteran Spanish director Pedro Almodovar contains elements of autofiction, following a director who turns her story of a turbulent past Christmas into the screenplay for her next film.
It marks the filmmaker's return to Spanish-language movies after his first film in English, The Room Next Door – which starred Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore and won the top prize at the 2024 Venice Film Festival.
One Night Only
Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro star in this high-concept romcom set in a future version of New York City where it is only legal for single people to have sex on one night of the year.
Barbaro and Turner play Allie and Owen, two single New Yorkers who meet by chance and begin to fall for each other, while other cast members include Maya Hawke, Julia Fox and Molly Ringwald.
I Want Your Sex
This erotic comedy thriller from Gregg Araki – his first film in over a decade – stars Cooper Hoffman as an unmotivated twenty-something whose wildest fantasies come true when he lands a new job working for provocative contemporary artist Erika Tracy, played by Olivia Wilde.
The eclectic cast also includes roles for Charli xcx, Johnny Knoxville, Daveed Diggs, Mason Gooding, Margaret Cho and Chase Sui Wonders.
