The Game Show Legend Behind the Invention of Caboodles
Sometimes, a simple moment can turn into something wonderful. At least, that’s the way the Caboodles story goes.
According to the brand’s official website, Wheel of Fortune star Vanna White was spotted using a Plano tackle box to organize and carry her makeup on the game show set in 1986.
“With a visionary eye to the future and the need for a functional yet fun cosmetic case, Plano Molding Company launched Caboodles a year later, with our On-The-Go-Girl,” the website reads.

Tram says the simplicity of the brand’s origin story is quite charming.
“In a way, Vanna White helped inspire the whole product just by finding a creative way to organize her makeup,” he shares.
The makeup pro says Caboodles makeup organizers were “revolutionary” for one main reason.
“They took a very practical product and made it feel fun, personal and stylish. At the time, there were not many products designed specifically to organize makeup in such an easy and convenient way,” Tram states.

How Caboodles Changed the Makeup Game
Once Caboodles arrived on the beauty scene, it was like a whole new world for makeup lovers.
“Caboodles changed the makeup game because it gave people a new way to organize and carry their beauty products,” Tram explains. “Before Caboodles, makeup was often kept in basic bags, drawers or cases without much organization. Caboodles introduced separate compartments, trays and space for different products, so everything was easier to see and access.”
The bright colors and playful design of them also made the organizers feel like more than a simple storage solution.
“It became something people actually wanted to own and show off. It also fit perfectly with the 1980s when bold colors, playful designs and stylish accessories were very popular,” he notes.
The makeup organizers combined fashion with function and they quickly grew in popularity.
“They were colorful, playful, portable and felt more like a personal accessory than just a storage box. It made organizing makeup part of the beauty experience itself,” he shares.

Why 1980s Caboodles Are Still a Best-Selling Makeup Organizer Today
It’s been several decades since Caboodles first came about, but the brand is still very relevant, Tram says.
“Caboodles are still so popular today because the design is fun, practical and it still works,” he tells Parade. “It gives consumers plenty of compartments, makes products easy to organize and is portable, which are all things people still look for in a compact organizer.”
Caboodles are typically used to store makeup, but Tram says the product’s versatility has helped it remain a fixture in many people’s homes, explaining, “People can use them to store makeup, art and craft supplies, nail products, kids’ beauty products and much more.”
There’s also the strong sense of nostalgia the brand evokes for many consumers.
“People who grew up with it in the 1980s and 1990s now want to share that experience with their kids and families, while younger consumers are attracted to Caboodles’ colorful, fun, retro style,” the makeup artist adds. “After all these years, Caboodles still offers both function and personality, which is what keeps the brand relevant.”
He notes that Caboodles even had a major influence on modern makeup organizers.
“The brand showed that beauty storage could be functional, stylish and cute at the same time,” he shares. “Features like separate compartments, trays, handles and portable designs are now common in many makeup organizers, travel cases and beauty bags.”
