You Don’t Need a Passport to Get Roman-Style Pizza—Just Head to Target ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

Frozen pizza has come a long way from being the thing you throw in the oven when nobody feels like cooking. These days, the freezer aisle is starting to look more like a pizzeria menu, and Target just added another option that might make you reconsider your usual delivery order.

Porta, a frozen Italian food brand specializing in handmade Roman-style pizza, has officially landed at Target stores nationwide. And while the trip to your local Target may not be quite as exciting as a flight to Rome, these pizzas are bringing plenty of Italy along for the ride.

The brand, which entered the U.S. market in 2024, is known for using traditional techniques and ingredients sourced from Italy. Its pizzas start with Italian flour from Le Marche and dough that’s slow-fermented for 24 hours before being hand-stretched, topped and flash-frozen. Yes, you read that correctly—hand-stretched dough. According to the company, “every pizza is hand-stretched, assembled by hand, and flash-frozen at peak freshness to preserve its flavor and texture.”

Additionally, the company sources tomatoes from Campania and the extra-virgin olive oil from Puglia.

In other words, there’s a lot more going on here than red sauce and cheese on a mass-produced frozen crust.

What Porta Pizzas Are Available at Target?

PORTA Pizza

Four Porta Roman-style pizzas are now available at participating Target stores and online, each with a suggested retail price of $11.99.

There’s a classic Margherita topped with tomato sauce, fior di latte mozzarella and basil, along with a Pepperoni featuring smoky uncured pepperoni, mozzarella and tomato sauce.

From there, things get even more interesting. There’s a Mushroom & Fontina, which combines mushrooms and fontina with a white, truffle-infused béchamel sauce. And for anyone who likes a little heat on their pizza, the Sweet & Spicy Soppressata comes topped with spicy soppressata, red onions, peperoncini and a drizzle of honey.

The pizzas are made without dough conditioners, preservatives or artificial additives, and that 24-hour fermentation is designed to help develop both the flavor and texture of the crust.

What Makes Roman-Style Pizza Different?

PORTA Pizza

Roman-style pizza can actually mean a couple of different things. There’s pizza al taglio, the thicker, airy rectangular pizza baked in trays and sold by the slice throughout Rome. But Porta’s round pizzas take their cues from tonda romana, another distinctly Roman style that’s all about a thin, crisp crust.

If Neapolitan pizza is known for its soft, chewy center and dramatically puffed edges, Roman-style pizza sits at almost the opposite end of the crust spectrum. Tonda romana is rolled or stretched very thin with little to no raised edge, then baked until the crust is crisp and rigid rather than soft and foldable.

That might sound a little like tavern-style pizza, especially to anyone from the Midwest. Both favor a thin, crispy crust, but tavern-style is generally rolled thin, topped all the way to the edge and famously cut into squares. Roman-style pizza remains its own thing, with roots in Rome and a characteristically crisp, cracker-like crust.

Porta puts its own spin on that tradition with dough made from Italian flour, fermented for 24 hours, then hand-stretched and topped. The result is a round pizza designed to deliver that signature Roman crunch rather than the soft, pillowy chew that’s made Neapolitan pizza so popular.

Porta Is Bringing a Little More Italy to the Freezer Aisle

Founder Cosimo Mammoliti, whose parents immigrated from Italy, created Porta with the goal of bringing the ingredients and craftsmanship you’d expect from restaurant pizza into an easy meal people could make at home.

Landing at Target is a significant expansion for the brand. Porta says its products are now sold at more than 4,500 retail locations across North America, making a Roman-style pizza night considerably easier to pull off without booking a flight.

No, pulling a pizza out of the freezer isn’t quite the same as grabbing one in Rome. But considering the only travel required is a trip through Target’s frozen-food aisle, we’ll take it.
