Lukas Maertens Will Skip 800, 1500 Frees at Euros; Looks to Settle Score in the 200 Meters ...Middle East

With the pool swimming portion of the 2026 European Aquatics Championships just days away, no complete start list has been produced, but the German Swimming Federation for its part has revealed its swimmers’ intended entries.

Watch the livestream of the meet free here.

Among the most substantial revelations from the release is that 400 meter freestyle World Record holder Lukas Maertens will swim the 200 and 400, but no 800 or 1500, at this meet.

That leaves him out of the 800 free where he won a bronze medal at last year’s World Championships.

His schedule will see him start with the 800 free relay on day 1 and then swim the 200 free on days 4 and 5 with quite a bit of rest.

“I have a score to settle with that one. And I still haven’t won an international medal in this event; it’s about time,” the 24-year-old Magdeburg trainee explained.

The reference is to the Paris Olympics, where he started his race too aggressively and finished 5th. The German Federation cites the “400m gold medal race and the subsequent media frenzy” which were “still taking their toll on him at the time.”

Of course that 400 free will remain on his schedule later in the meet, with a chance to become the Olympic, World, and European Champion all at the same time.

“I’m far from satisfied. Perhaps I’ve become a bit more relaxed, now that I’ve already won the most important races,” he said of his focus. “But that doesn’t change the fact that I still want to be at the very top. In any case, I’m still training just as hard and with the same discipline.”

That choice allows him to avoid the cluster in the men’s distance freestyles where Germany is arguably the world’s best nation at the moment. While each country can enter up to four swimmers in the preliminary heats of each individual event, only two can advance to later rounds.

In his absence, 19-year-old Johannes Liebmann, Sven Schwarz, and Oliver Klemet still give Germany three realistic medal shots in the distance races.

Among swimmers who won’t be in that 200 free is Kaii Winkler, the American-trained performer. He’ll swim the 100 free and 100 fly but no 200 free in spite of swimming a best time of 1:46.6 in December.
