Two outs. Two strikes. Down two. Bottom of the ninth inning. The crowd is roaring. The game is on the line.
Alex Bregman steps back in against Blue Jays closer Louis Varland, who hadn’t blown a save all year (24 successful before today) and had allowed just one home run through 58.2 IP.
And how does Bregman respond? With a GAME-TYING TWO-RUN BLAST to send us into extra innings. This was easily the biggest swing of Bregman’s Cubs career. And it was THE moment of the game, even considering how it ended (hang onto that).

— Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) August 6, 2026But as if that weren’t already enough, Bregman also kept the game tied with an incredible defensive stop that saved a run in the top half of the 10th inning (h/t to Ernie Clement, who had an even crazier, game-saving play in the bottom half of the 10th).
Even though PCA basically willed the Cubs to a win on his own today, Alex Bregman is the Ankin Law “Making it Personal” Player of the Game.

Okay, but there was that WHOLE OTHER MOMENT when Pete Crow-Armstrong gave the Cubs a chance to win (and then ultimately stole the show on his own) by knocking an almost game-winning single into center field, before Carson Kelly was cut down at the plate. But in the moment, PCA was able to take second base. Then, after Toronto intentionally walked Seiya Suzuki, PCA stole third, and with the throw scooting out into left field, he was able to come home and score the game-winning run. I mean. My god. He is just incredible.
And you know what? Who cares. He’s also the Ankin Law “Making it Personal” Player of the Game. There are no rules. He is such a superstar; it is really incredible.

Some other thoughts: There were some big, scoreless innings after regulation from Caleb Thielbar and Trent Thornton. It’s not easy to keep runs off the board with a free runner, and they are not the best of the Cubs relievers right now. They both got the job done.
Also great work from Aaron Civale, who covered the three innings himself with only one run allowed. That wasn’t just a good outcome; it was a valuable performance in that he covered a big stretch of the game without burning any other relievers. Even more important when you’re playing a makeup game on a scheduled day off, AND it goes to extras.
As for the rest of the Cubs offense … it was not really a banner day. But it’s hard to blame them. The Blue Jays Ace (and 2026 AL Cy Young candidate) Dylan Cease just absolutely dominated the Chicago Cubs today at Wrigley Field. He does that. Often.
Since the start of July, Cease has a 7.0-inning shutout over the Mariners, an 8.0-inning shutout over the Giants, a complete-game shutout over the Red Sox, and now a 7.0-inning shutout over the Cubs. He’s really, really good. The Cubs offense has had its moments lately, including against some good pitching, but they just could not get on top of him today.
But it doesn’t matter, because they got the job done. That was such an incredible win. This team, man. They are special.
